Medicine Hat College in the Higher Ed Landscape: Insights from 2011 Market Research
This is a reminder to all college staff and faculty of Ken Steele's visit to MHC Thursday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. He will be presenting the results from the applicant surveys that were conducted this summer. This will provide us with an idea of the perceptions applicants have of MHC.
Everyone is encouraged to attend his presentation in the theatre.
Food Bank Fundraiser
In an effort to raise money for the MHCSA Food Bank, we are asking all faculty and staff to bring in any empty bottles for recycling. From November 28 to December 2, we will be collecting bottles in Student Services, specifically the Advising area and the Career Services area. People can bring in bags of empties and we will arrange for Redi Enterprises to pick up the bottles for return. All proceeds will be donated to the MHCSA Food Bank to buy grocery cards for students in need. We know there are many students that will be struggling during the upcoming holiday season.
Miss Suzie Sunshine Pageant
Looking for some lunchtime entertainment? Come check out the Miss Suzie Sunshine male beauty pageant on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at noon in the MHC Snake Pit. Members of the Rattlers will be dressing up as women and competing for the title of “Miss Suzie Sunshine.” Admission is $5 for the event or $8 gets you admission, two slices of pizza and unlimited refreshments. Funds raised will support KidSport, an agency that supports families who need assistance to cover the costs of organized sports.
Name the Campaign
The Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta is looking for your assistance in spreading the word; a regional eat local campaign has begun and they need a name. With the deadline fast approaching, we encourage you and all your peers to submit your ideas by November 28. From there, a selection committee will narrow it down to the top 5 and post them online for the public to vote. There are prizes to be won for the first and second place winners. Need a little inspiration? Visit their events page for some video insight.

iGEM Competition
iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition, is a multi-disciplinary jamboree held annually at MIT in the field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology is an emerging field where scientists combine biology and engineering to create microorganisms or biological components for use in society and focuses on the implications of these technologies to the world from a scientific, business, and ethical standpoint.
Success at this competition requires a diverse team specializing in engineering, sciences from a variety of disciplines, business/marketing, visual arts, and ethics. Over 250 teams from around the world competed in this exciting opportunity for undergraduate students this year. Join David Lloyd, a two-time competitor and first-time advisor at the University of Calgary, and Jenna Fredt, a first-time graduate student advisor for the University of Lethbridge team as they explore this exciting opportunity. No scientific background is required!

Christmas Party Reminder
Ticket sales have closed for Friday's staff Christmas party. We'll see you Friday, Nov. 25 at Desert Blume Golf Course. Cocktails are at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and dancing at 8 p.m.
MRU and MHC Sign Official Document for Business Administration Degree
Students at Medicine Hat College now have more choices when it comes to obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Medicine Hat.
Officials from Mount Royal University were on campus Monday to sign an official partnership agreement, giving students at MHC the option of earning a bachelor of business administration degree through their institution.
Students with a MHC business administration diploma with a major in accounting, management, marketing or financial services can carry on with studies for a third and fourth year to complete the MRU degree in Management. Classes will be taught based on the MRU curriculum but will use MHC resources and faculty.
Several students are already enrolled in the program this fall, and Schwartz expects the program to continue flourishing.
Students wishing to obtain a degree on the MHC campus now have a dozen choices, including several collaborative degrees with universities in the province.
Smoking Areas
Did you know the Alberta Tobacco reduction act prohibits smoking inside all public places or that the college is liable for fines starting at $10,000 for a first offence for allowing smoking on its premises?
Individuals who smoke where prohibited can receive fines ranging from up to $1,000 for a first offence and up to $5,000 for a second or subsequent offence. In addition, a ticket amount of $250 can be issued for smoking in a prohibited area. Security and custodial staff regularly find cigarette butts in washrooms and we all see the unpleasant litter at many of our entrances.
Please remind your fellow employees and students that there are designated smoking areas on campus. If someone is smoking near an entrance, please ask them politely to move to one of the smoking areas.
Career Fair a Success
The Student Employment and Career Centre would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the MHC students and staff who helped to make the event a positive experience for our visiting employers. The exhibitors commented on both the number of students who engaged them in some good conversations, and the faculty that dropped by their booths to speak with them. A special thank you to all of our amazing volunteers whose assistance and excellent service impressed our recruiters throughout the day.
Congratulations to the following winners of our Faculty Prize Draws: Jody MacKenzie, Cathy Linowski, Peter Eliuk, and Gerard Klotz. In addition, 18 students walked away with prizes ranging from t-shirts, hats, gift cards, a Kobo E-reader, Nintendo DS, and a Wii.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: "The 75-Percent Rule"
In "Leapfrog: Integrating Revision and Research Into College Writing," Marc Schuster, Instructor in Arts & Humanities, at Montgomery County Community College (PA), describes a strategy to teach how to use sources in research papers and how to document them correctly. He discovered that students began to go far beyond the simple corrections for spelling and grammar, and began to make significant changes in their work overall.
