MHC News

Three Libraries in One with New Program
Peggy Revell, Medicine Hat News

One card can now open a world of reading for anyone with a library card for Medicine Hat Public Library, the Shortgrass System or Medicine Hat College.

While books were always available to be loaned between the MHC and MHPL/Shortgrass system a third card had to be issued for a user to get this material, explained Shelley Ross with MHPL.

"(Now) people can carry just one card in their wallet for all of the libraries in southeastern Alberta," she said of the expanded partnership.

This change means the public can also use the library's website to have library material delivered for pick-up at whatever library they want, including the Vera Bracken Library at the college.

"By sharing resources, by working together we're making more resources available for the community," said Keith Walker, director of library services at MHC.

Along this line, MHPL, MHC library and Shortgrass also worked together to bring in a new intern, Kris Samraj.

"Each institution really wanted to have a library intern, a professional librarian newly graduated to come in with their ideas and excitement and also to give them a really exciting professional opportunity," said Ross. "But each one of us singly couldn't afford to draw a student to Medicine Hat.

Together, the three could afford it and also make for an interesting opportunity for a grad to experience a college library, regional library system and a public system.

"The variety of experience that was offered here, I really hadn't seen in any other program or position in Canada," said Samraj. "Every day is very interesting and very new and  that's certainly the reason I came out here."

Samraj grew up in Lacombe, but until recently had been living in Vancouver and graduated from the University of Alberta with a Masters in Library and Information studies this April.

Samraj is splitting his time between Shortgrass, MHPL and the MHC's library. During the summer, Samraj spent a lot of time doing outreach for the rural libraries, while the return of school has meant he's spending more time at the college and Medicine Hat library.

Currently he's learning about MHC programs, community outreach and looking at doing research projects  including the best way to circulate e-book readers, and studying how people use the library to see what can be improved.

Bookstore Going Green
The Bookstore gives out thousands of plastic bags every year and wants to stop those bags from going into our local landfills. In an effort to be more green, The Bookstore will phase out the use of plastic bags over the next few months.

Please bring your own bag, or purchase a reusable one at The Bookstore for a minimal fee. Reusable bags can be used over and over again and are large enough to accommodate textbooks and other bulky items. There is also a great selection of backpacks, laptop cases, messenger bags and portfolios that are great options for reducing plastic bag usage.

Thank you for your support in promoting a greener environment!
