One Book One Community
October 12-13
The 8th annual One Book One Community book selection is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. Activities for the OBOC event include:

Friday October 12
Esplanade Studio Theatre, 7 p.m.
OBOC and the Esplanade present an evening with author Steven Galloway. A musical performance by the Community Orchestra, book sales, and reception will follow.

Saturday October 13
Medicine Hat College, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Book discussions and other activities, including a presentation by Terry Chapman and Peter Mueller. A highlight for the day will be discussions lead by special guests who lived through the Siege of Sarajevo and now call Medicine Hat home.

Copies of The Cellist of Sarajevo are available from the MHC Libraries in print and on Kobo eReaders. OBOC is a partnership between Medicine Hat College Libraries, Medicine Hat Public Library, L.E.A.R.N. and community volunteers. Admission is free. Visit www.obocmh.ca for more information.


UN World Food Day
October 15-19, 2012

MHC will be recognizing UN World Food Day as a Human Rights Public Awareness Committee Event.
Employees are encouraged to participate by:
  • Eating food from around the world. The Cafeteria will feature a different daily special this week representing different nationalities.
  • Donating non-perishable food items to the Student Association Peer Support Food Bank for students.
  • Learning about the cost of food around the world by checking out displays in both the Medicine Hat and Brooks Cafeterias.

All employees and students are welcome to attend this free clinic (no children, please).

MHC Career Day
Tuesday, October 23
Centennial Hall and B-wing Hallway
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Career information and opportunities abound on Tuesday, October 23 when we host Career Day 2012. With more than 60 exhibitors already registered to participate, students can:
  • Discover the types of careers available with their educational training
  • Get a head start on their competition in securing a summer job, practicum placement, internship, or a career position
  • Find out what the job market is currently like in their industry
  • Meet potential employers and contacts in their field of study
  • Hone their networking skills
  • Pick up some SWAG, popcorn, and enter to win some PHENOMENAL prizes
Each year we have students who walk away with job offers for summer opportunities or career positions. But this event is not just for students who are currently completing their programs and will be entering the job market next semester…..the main purpose of Career Day is for ALL students to gather information and explore opportunities, to “think outside the box” in terms of what they can do with their education, and to make some valuable career connections for when they are ready to begin work.

All faculty who bring down their classes, or refer their students to attend, will be entered to win a special prize for faculty only. In the past, faculty have won gift cards, Kobo E-readers, GPS systems, IPODS, and Medalta Pottery to name a few………don’t miss out on this year’s prizes!
