Students, staff and visitors to Medicine Hat College’s Centennial Hall can now admire a set of four new paintings, thanks to a recent donation from Visual Communications instructor Poul Nielsen.
As the instructor nears retirement, he decided to do a series and donate the artwork to MHC.
The collection, titled “CX Configurations – 4 seasons,” was painted by Nielsen specifically for the space, near the main entrance of the college.
“I like to work big,” he said, noting that each piece is eight feet high and four feet across. “Ralph (Weeks) had told me for a number of years that he wanted paintings up there, so I thought ‘I’ll do a series and donate it.’”
As noted in the collection’s title, the series reflects the four seasons.
“I measure so much of my time here in terms of seasons,” he said. “It’s an obvious metaphor for the life process.”
The paintings use a calligraphic brush stroke that Poul learned during his many trips to China.
“I was so taken by the mark that I decided to celebrate that in my own work,” he said. “These pieces are a connector between abstraction and representational art.”
As Poul enters his last year of teaching at MHC, he reflects on the program he helped build.
“I’ve been here 25 years. I’ve loved this program,” he said. “I’ve never viewed teaching as being different than an artist. You’ve got to get fed. The interaction with students and instructors is inspiring.”

NISOD Innovation Abstract
In “The Role of Blogging in Learning Support Writing Classes,” Maria Johnson, English Faculty, Georgia Piedmont Technical College, describes the benefits of blogging, especially in getting students to communicate better, more often, and from early in the term throughout the course. They learn better how to transfer information from one venue to others, and they develop cohorts in class with whom to share posts. Students embrace the concept of blogging, and their performance improved.

Lockers / Towel Service
Employees and students are invited to reserve or renew a locker in the change rooms located on the lower level of G Wing by phoning ext. 3840 or visiting the weight room office. Towel service is also available for $5/month, $10/semester, or $20/year and is payable at the weight room office.
MHC is preparing to implement a new exchange server which means that Microsoft Outlook users may notice a few changes when using webmail. Please note, an email will be sent to you in advance of the upgrade being made to your computer.
What does the exchange upgrade mean for users?
1. A new log-in screen (shown to the left)
2. Increased message size, we have increased it to 25MB which is what the three major free email providers Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail provide. Please note that many businesses and institutions stay with the default 10MB so users may receive bounce backs and will need to decrease message size
3. Increased browser support, the four major browsers are now supported. Chrome, FireFox, IE and Safari.
4. The ability to open other user’s shared calendars within OWA, much like as within Outlook.
Call for Homecoming Volunteers
Homecoming weekend is quickly approaching! We are all looking forward to the festivities on September 15. But it wouldn’t be possible without your help! The headliner concert event on Saturday, September 15 requires dozens of volunteers. If you’d like to lend a hand, please email Jennifer Thompson at jthompson@mhc.ab.ca as soon as possible. Please include the times you are available and if you have any limitations.
We’ll need several volunteers at 3:30 p.m. to help run the ATB Family Fun Zone, and we’ll have shifts throughout the night to assist in general concert operations. In return, we’ll provide you with a volunteer t-shirt and a meal voucher. Earl’s will be on hand for the event so you’re sure to have something good! And yes, the more the merrier, so if your spouse wants to lend a hand, sign him/her up too.

Residence Incident Update
Former student Dustin Satterthwaite pleaded guilty to nine of 12 charges in Court of Queens Bench today. Satterthwaite was charged last January following an incident at Medicine Hat College residence where he was allegedly involved in an argument with other students. Charges against Satterthwaite include pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon and unlawfully being in a dwelling and uttering death threats.
Sentencing is expected to be handed down on October 30. Medicine Hat College will continue to keep all students, staff and faculty informed as the case continues.
APA Style Guides Go Green
In an effort to reduce its environmental footprint, Library Services will no longer be providing paper copies of How-to Guides, including the American Psychological Association (APA) style guides, at the Information Desk. All library-created handouts are available in electronic format on the library website. We encourage linking to the How-to Guide page in order to ensure students have access to the most up to date guides. Revised handouts will be posted over the next two weeks.
Several sets of paper handouts will be made available on Reserve at the Library Circulation Desk for ease of access. Assistance with APA Style will continue to be provided at the Library Information Desk.
Paper copies of handouts will continue to be provided to students who attend library instruction sessions. For more information about booking library instruction for your students see the Library Instruction page.

Course Materials & Copyright Agreement
This is a notice to all instructors who wish to produce course packs with excerpts from books.
In light of recent developments in copyright law and the Supreme Court of Canada judgments, ACCC (Association of Canadian Community Colleges) has advised its members to delay signing the Model Agreement with Access Copyright. As our executive waits for ACCC to publish their legal analysis of the Model Agreement to make their final decision, the college wishes to ensure that you and your students have access to the resources that are needed with a minimal negative impact.
As a result, some course pack materials may need to be changed for the fall semester 2012. To facilitate a smooth transition, please contact Clint Lawrence, Copyright Officer to review your materials.

Vehicle Repairs on Campus

College Drive Reconstruction Project
Please note a portion of College Drive between Markwick Drive and Primrose Drive (west) will be closed to through traffic for approximately three weeks starting in mid-August. Vehicle traffic will be detoured to College Avenue, Kipling Street and Dunmore Road during the road closure. Dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

YOU Innovate Canada – Challenge your students to innovate!
Are you looking for ways to inspire and encourage your students to be more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial?
For the second year in row, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is hosting the YOU Innovate Canada tournament in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week Canada. Taking place this fall, this tournament challenges Canadians over 16 years old (one to five people per team) to create as much value as they can, whether it be social, environmental, monetary or other, out of the secret object. Participants then submit a video explaining what they did. The top innovators will receive exciting awards!
YOU can bring this great learning experience to your students by:
• Integrating YOU Innovate Canada into any course you're teaching at a Canadian post-secondary institution or high school. Or,
• Promoting the tournament and encouraging students to participate independently.
We have compiled great educator resources to make it as easy as possible for you to incorporate YOU Innovate Canada into your courses for the fall. Note that you could plan to commit between two and four classrooms hours to it (this includes an introduction and an optional in-class film festival).
Applications open September 27th, 2012 along with the announcement of the top-secret object at the centre of this tournament. All submissions must be received by October 15th. Champions will be selected by our expert judging panel and through online public voting and will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 12th-18th).
