MHC News

MHC receives $2.2 million donation
Medicine Hat College recognized its largest single donation in history today with the announcement of a $2.2 million bequest that will benefit the Division of Health Studies.

Ron Rodgers left the generous gift in memory of his wife Willma prior to his passing in 2011. The donation came as a surprise to MHC’s foundation, as Rodgers had left no prior indication to the foundation office of a planned bequest.

Willma, his wife of 33 years, passed away more than a decade ago but he never forgot his commitment to honour her with a lasting legacy. The money will be used as an endowment and the interest earned will go towards assisting students with bursaries and programming costs within the division.

“I kept reading the documents thinking ‘WOW! What a generous gift from an amazing man,” said Deanna Haysom, fund development officer.

But for Rodgers’ niece Jennifer Ericson, the legacy donation couldn’t be more fitting for a “quiet, gentle man whose wife was the light of his life.”

“He was very proud of Willma’s career in nursing. She worked hard and was successful in her nursing career in an era when many women left the workplace once they married,” said Ericson.

They settled in Manitoba and lived a happily married life for more than 30 years. In the early 1990s they retired to Medicine Hat until Willma’s passing from ovarian cancer in 1999 at the young age 65. Ericson said Ron never got over the loss of Willma. He passed away last year at the age of 89.

“He worked hard throughout his life and was not extravagant – he always lived within his means and saved for the future,” Ericson recalled of her uncle. “I know Ron will have had a great deal of comfort before he died knowing about his gift in Willma’s name – for him that would have been priceless.”

NISOD Innovation Abstract
In “Year Up: Social Entrepreneurship and the Community College,” Peggy Bradford, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Wayne Beckles, Dean of Academic Services, at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) (MD), describe a partnership between BCCC and Year Up, a non-profit organization designed to provide participating urban youth, from low-income families, with continuing education, guidance, skill development, and hands-on experiences. Current retention data indicate that this partnership has great potential for improving student performance that results in high course- and program-completion rates.

YOU Innovate Canada – applications open this week!
Are you looking for ways to inspire and encourage your students to be more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial?

For the second year in row, the Canadian Youth Business  Foundation (CYBF) is hosting the YOU Innovate Canada tournament in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week Canada. Taking place this fall, this tournament challenges Canadians over 16 years old (one to five people per team) to create as much value as they can, whether it be social, environmental, monetary or other, out of the secret object. Participants then submit a video explaining what they did. The top innovators will receive exciting awards!

YOU can bring this great learning experience to your students by:
• Integrating YOU Innovate Canada into any course you're teaching at a Canadian post-secondary institution or high school. Or,
• Promoting the tournament and encouraging students to participate independently.

We have compiled great educator resources to make it as easy as possible for you to incorporate YOU Innovate Canada into your courses for the fall. Note that you could plan to commit between two and four classrooms hours to it (this includes an introduction and an optional in-class film festival).

Applications open September 27th, 2012 along with the announcement of the top-secret object at the centre of this tournament. All submissions must be received by October 15th. Champions will be selected by our expert judging panel and through online public voting and will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 12th-18th).

Visit www.cybf.ca/youinnovate for more information about YOU Innovate Canada. If you have any questions, contact us at gewinfo@cybf.ca.
