Science Instructor Receives National Recognition
Elizabeth Pennefather-O’Brien of MHC’s science department was recently selected as one of five individuals from across Canada to receive an inaugural College Sector Educator Award from The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE).
“This inaugural cohort represent faculty from across Canada who truly exemplify the best in college teaching excellence and peer mentoring,” said Janice MacMillan, award coordinator. “All of these educational leaders help to support and ensure the success of their teaching colleagues as well as their students. In addition to working at their own colleges, they have provided exceptional leadership regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally in the field of teaching and learning.”
Described as someone who sets herself apart through her “outstanding teaching, leadership and mentoring abilities”, Elizabeth is highly involved with both the college and community. As an instructor, she is co-facilitator for a faculty learning community, sits on the Faculty Association Executive Board, and is a member of faculty evaluation, teaching innovation, bio-safety, and research management committees. She is also very active off campus, whether presenting at provincial and international meetings for the Alberta Introductory Biology Association and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society or judging the local science fair and volunteering for the local Animal Care Committee.

Since its inception in 1981, the STLHE has expanded to over 50 institutional members consisting of teaching and resource professionals from across Canada and beyond. Despite creating and distributing the prestigious 3M awards for teaching excellence for almost 20 years, the organization has never had a college sector award until this year, noted Linda Schwartz, MHC vice-president academic.

It’s Not Easy Being Green – Departmental Challenge
Employees are encouraged to be green in the days ahead in the lead up to the college's annual Environmental Week running June 3-9. Staff and faculty can challenge themselves ‘At Home, At Work or On the Go’ by taking on one or all of the tasks listed on the environmental challenge spreadsheets that were distributed to departments last week. There will be a prize for the person who tackles the most ‘green’ challenges.
In addition to tackling challenges like shortening shower times and composting food waste, participants are also encouraged to keep a tally of their mileage while walking/biking to and from work, walking the inside trail on campus (see interior map) and walking the outside trail on campus (see exterior map). To track your progress more easily, participants can download a free pedometer app to their cell phone or pick up an MHC pedometer from Rodger Sloan later this week.
They will also provide a home for Kermit for the year and the department will be treated to lunch.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
The “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes Campaign” is an annual fundraising event held by the Sexual Assault Response Committee (SARC) to help end sexual assault and sexual abuse, and violence against women. This event is in its fourth year in Medicine Hat and is taking place on June 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. in Veterans’ Memorial Park Band Shell during the Medicine Hat Spectrum Festival. This event asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes.
Male employees and students are currently being photographed around campus wearing red high heels to bring awareness to the event happening next month. The SA is also encouraging people to walk in the event or make a donation to the cause. Please note, because not everyone is capable of wearing and walking in high-heel shoes for one mile, there is also the option of decorating and wearing your own shoes.

The men that participate in Medicine Hat will choose a placard that has been completed by members of the community who has experienced sexual assault/abuse in their own lives, and in effect, take up their cause.

Not sure how to keep your kids busy over the summer months? Register them in the many exciting summer programs offered through Continuing Studies at MHC. Choose from a wide variety of arts, science and sports programs, or check out special theme programs like Cooking with Strawberry Shortcake or Superheroes Camp. Camps are also offered for children ages 3-5.
Crave is now operating on summer hours and will be open from noon to 3 p.m. during the week. However, in response to employee requests, the campus pub and grill will be extending its Friday hours until 5 p.m. with a special promo called "Thank Goodness I'm Faculty and Staff" (TGIFS) for college employees. Come out and try their new summer menu and take advantage of TGIFS specials including a beverage special and 10% appetizer discount between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday hours may be extended if turnout is high.
If participation and interest is good, this promotion may continue through the summer and fall months.

Steps for Life
Thanks to all who participated in the “Steps for Life” walk yesterday. Over $800 was raised for victims of workplace tragedies.
