Spend an inspirational evening with motivational speaker Spencer West, Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the College Theatre.
Spencer has an amazing story. At the age of five, a genetic disorder claimed both his legs. Navigating through life on his hands, Spencer has always lived with purpose and lives every day following his personal motto “If you work hard, never give up and laugh a lot, you can achieve anything”! His positive attitude and passion are contagious.
In June he and two friends are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for East Africa drought relief. Spencer has shared the stage with Mikhail Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama, Al Gore, Sir Richard Branson, as well as entertainers like Hedley, and Nelly Furtado (who donated $1 million this year to the organization Spencer works with), and recently appeared on the George Stroumboulopoulos show.
The event is all ages and Spencer’s message/attitude is great to share with your children, friends, and family. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased either at the Students Association office or at Hat High.
Join the Carrotmob
Sustainable design students have signed on to coordinate a Carrotmob Thursday as a way to turn classroom lessons into real-world experience.
A Carrotmob involves people buying many goods from a company in a short amount of time. The company then dedicates a portion of the funds raised during the Carrotmob to make socially responsible changes to the business. The Carrotmob movement began in 2008 and has since seen over 175 events in 20 countries.
The students in James Kuehn’s CADD course have found a way to integrate the Carrotmob movement with their classroom lessons. The students have arranged a Carrotmob at Madhatter Coffee Roastery in downtown Medicine Hat. Students and other Carrotmob members will be on hand from 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., on Thursday but coffee purchase profits from the entire day’s sales will be dedicated to environmentally friendly upgrades at the business.
Madhatter’s Coffee Roastery is located at 513 – 3rd St. SE in Medicine Hat. Reusable mugs are encouraged.

My First Year Launches at Brooks
Last Friday MHC unveiled a new program for the Brooks campus called “My First Year.” Students in the program will be enrolled in a wide variety of courses that are transferable to universities across Alberta. The curriculum will be interdisciplinary, providing students with an exceptional foundational learning experience.
“This is a significant day for programming at Medicine Hat College’s Brooks campus,” said Linda Schwartz, vice president of academic. “We are serving Brooks students in a unique way, enabling them to access quality, first-year university courses right where they live.”
My First Year is considered to be a groundbreaking cohort model of education. Once students are admitted into the My First Year program, they will enroll in the ten courses collectively over two semesters.
This fall will also mark the return of the Administrative Office Professional program (formerly Office Technology). Pre-employment trades programming is also available, beginning with electrical at the end of April. Another highly regarded program at MHC Brooks, Health Care Aide, will see its next intake in January 2013.

Geek Turns 5!
Educational Technology Services is once again looking for technology enthused educators willing to share some of the techniques they use for integrating technology with teaching and learning at Medicine Hat College during the 2012 Geekapalooza event this August 23rd.
Sessions for Geekapalooza should be between 20 - 30 minutes long, and must pertain to the use of technology in education. These sessions are not intended as training, but rather engaging information sessions. Presenters will be given an event t-shirt, a special swag bag full of goodies, as well as a chance to win a prize intended for presenters only.
Not only are we looking for presenters, but we are also looking for volunteers to help with various duties including Session Hosts and Kiosk Attendants. Although the event runs from 10am-3pm, we will arrange to accommodate any schedule including those wanting to attend sessions during the day. Volunteers will be guaranteed an event swag bag and will be given specific guidance on their individual responsibilities in the days leading up to the event.
If you or someone you know may be interested in presenting or volunteering for Geekapalooza 2012, please contact Andrea Woods for more information.
