"I got involved mainly because it is a very good cause for a relatively inexpensive contribution. And, there was always the possibility of winning some money…" said Marie.

Payroll Trivia
Did you know you can have your pay split into two separate bank accounts? You have the option of splitting your pay by a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your total pay.
If this interests you, please stop into the Human Resources department with your bank account information (void cheque, etc) to complete the required form. In order to make a change to your bank account(s) for this month’s pay, the updated information must be received in payroll by February 16.
Dorian Hesjedal Library User of the Month
Second-year CADD student Dorian Hesjedal was chosen as the Library User of the Month for February.
“That is what the Vera Bracken Library is all about, an environment that has both form and function. With its high ceilings, extensive use of daylighting, and deliberate layout; the Vera Bracken Library is a very inviting setting. As a second-year CADD student, I occasionally like to take a break from my workstation and come down to the library for some rejuvenation. The soft seating area along the West wall, with its large windows, has become my sanctuary.
What really completes the experience are the people. A person can design the“best” building, but without people, you just have a shell. The staff here at the Vera Bracken Library makes this environment complete. As a future alumni, I look forward to seeing the Medicine Hat College continue to utilize sustainable building design in their future projects.”
National Sweater Day - February 9
The Campus Life committee wants to remind staff to put on your favourite sweater and turn the heat down a few degrees to help take action against climate change, and work toward a sustainable future.
By rethinking how we use energy and how much we use, we can make a big impact on climate change.
If every Canadian lowered the heat a few degrees this winter, it'd be like taking 300,000 vehicles off the road! So wear that sweater and make the world a better place for your grandchildren.

Confidential Document Shredding
As a college, we are required to protect personal information in our custody, such as student and employee records, which can be extended to the proper disposal of records. Personal information should be shredded if release of that information could be considered an unreasonable invasion of privacy.
According to the FOIP Act, examples of an unreasonable invasion of privacy include:
- Information relating to an individual’s employment or educational history
- Personal recommendations, evaluations, or references
- Anything that includes an individual’s name linked with other information that could be revealing in some way
- Any information indicating an individual’s racial or ethnic origin, or religious or political beliefs
- Information relating to medical history or disability status.
As an alternative, staff are able to personally shred documents in the college's new shredder. It is safe and easy to use. Simply stop by Facility Operations for a brief tutorial.
One Book One Community
The One Book One Community committee is busy planning our next event for October 2012 and they need your help. Each year, the OBOC book to be read by all of Medicine Hat is selected from suggestions from the community.
During February 2012, we will be taking submissions via our online suggestion form, in person at the Vera Bracken Library, Medicine Hat Public Library, and Coles the Book People in the Medicine Hat Mall.
We require the book be Canadian, available in paperback format and substantial enough to generate discussion and debate. Fiction and non-fiction titles are welcome.
Black History Month 2012
The Human Rights Public Awareness Committee is preparing several displays and events to celebrate Black History Month in February.
Black History Month will showcase stories of African Canadians from Canada’s past and also the stories of current students and staff who have chosen to make Medicine Hat their home.
Please look for hallway displays throughout February at Medicine Hat and Brooks Campus and stay tuned for an event at the end of the month. If you would like to be involved in this event, please contact Leigh Cunningham at 403.504.3654.
2012 Employee Recognition Awards
It is time to kick off our 2012 Employee Recognition Program. You can help make MHC a great place to work by participating. All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.
Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:
College Employee of the Year
Academic Achievement
Service Achievement
Innovation Award
Nomination and selection procedures, information regarding the criteria for each award, and nomination forms are available online here. Please feel free to contact Human Resources for further information. Nomination deadline is February 29. Who will YOU nominate?
NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Statement of Teaching Philosophy"
“Statement of Teaching Philosophy,” by Amber Abbas, a Ph.D. candidate in South Asian History, at The University of Texas at Austin, is an intriguing look at a soon-to-be professor’s thinking about the educator she wants to be, and she makes a good case for implementing some successful strategies that engage students in shared experiences that help them “live” history.
