Let Your Inner Geek Shine
The fourth annual Geekapalooza is just two weeks away. For anyone wondering if they are geeky enough to attend, here are a few of the exciting topics to drag out anyone's deeply hidden inner geek.
Learn about SafeAssign. Plagiarism is a major concern for academics, and has become increasingly harder to track. However, tools make finding copied works easy. It even allows students to check their own work before submission to make sure any information needing a citation are flagged.
Remember writing course notes out on clear overhead projector sheets? Check out Using Document Cameras. Project any item, lesson or object onto a screen or smartboard in front of the entire classroom. Cathy Linowski will lead this session, as she uses it in her classrooms for dissections.
Learn about e-books, posting your lectures online or streaming them live, and accessing sharepoint from home. All sessions will be available online afterward to review.
Organizer Andrea Wilkes is hoping to hit the three-digit attendance mark this year. The first 100 people at the morning sessions will receive a swag bag. Door prizes includes an iPad 2. To be qualified, bring a 'passport' to at least two sessions and both open houses to receive stamps.
The open houses are exciting this year, said Wilkes. IT Services is opening its doors to staff and providing tours through the "often secretive" world of IT, including the server room, she said.
As the second open house, the sandbox is the perfect place to play with new technology. A Mac and two PCs loaded with new software, an iPad 2, a tricaster and an interactive projector are some of the items you can fiddle with.

Family Orientation a Fun Event
"This is a very fun event!"
That's what Andrea Seiler, student recruiter, wants students and their families to know about the family orientation evening Sept. 1.
"We do our best to keep the event light by visiting with each family and making a personal connection," she said.
During the information session recruiters share some of the ups and downs of the college experience, including details about budgeting, academic policies, and FOIP regulations. The team also covers the basics like buying text books, finding classes, renting lockers, etc.
Parents will also get a tour and a chance to see and experience college life. This can give them great comfort knowing where their students will be living and attending school," said Seiler. "We will also share with them some resources we have on campus. This can be helpful for them when coaching their students through a tough time away from home."
The evening usually draws 40 to 50 students and family members. Pizza and prizes are included.
"It’s a great shared experience for both students and family members alike, to see and meet other families who are going through the same stage in life is very affirming. We always finish the event with happy faces. Everyone is glad they could come and most leave feeling more at ease with the upcoming transition to college."
Teachers Curling League
Looking for a fun, social, inexpensive hobby this winter season? Instructor Ben Moffat is hoping to form at least one MHC curling league team. Anyone from beginners to seasoned professionals are encouraged to sign up and have fun. Teams are mixed and consist of four to five players.
The league is every Thursday at 4:30 p.m. from mid-October to March. The cost for the season is to be determined but described as reasonable. Contact Ben at 3902 for more details.
Have Your Voice Heard - Be a Vital Signs Grader
The fifth annual Medicine Hat’s Vital Signs will be made public on October 4, 2011, but the Community Foundation needs to hear what Hatters think of their city first.
Each year the Community Foundation publishes Vital Signs which looks at various components of life in Medicine Hat including Health & Wellness, Housing, Learning and Safety to name a few.
Residents are asked to go online to http://app.fluidsurveys.com/s/MHVitalSigns-2011/ and give their opinion on selected statements. These responses will be collected anonymously and collated in order to give a final grade, which will be published in the October publication. Residents have until Friday, August 26 to complete the survey.
We encourage all Hatters to participate in the survey and have their opinions heard.
New Fiscal Year, New Copy of License Needed
With the beginning of a new fiscal year comes the need for Facility Operations to make a new copy of your driver's license. The folks in Facilities ask that anyone who drives a college fleet vehicle go to their office, license in hand, so a new copy can be made. They will make the copy on a special form, so there's no need for you to make a separate copy. Remember, everyone must get a new copy made. Don't forget to familiarize yourself with the curent vehicle policy, too.
Change to August Payroll Submission Date
Please submit time sheets and payroll documentation to Human Resources by 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2011. Note that this is one day earlier than the date noted on the payroll calendar.

Changing of the Guards
Security personnel on campus have a new look. Corps of Commissionaires has officially taken over the security contract for MHC, replacing G4S on August 1. The nine security staff currently caring for the campus, however, will remain the same.
Jim Wessel, site supervisor for Corps of Commissionaires, shared an image of the new look for security staff.

New Maps Available Online
With all of the changes and construction on campus recently, new campus interior and parking area maps are now available online. You will find the new maps to be colourful and easy to use.
Please keep these links handy or print out a map for your workspace. They are convenient in helping new staff, students and visitors find their way around campus.

Local Students Take Science Trip of a Lifetime
Congratulations to Peter Wallis, MHC’s Dean of Science, for his work in mentoring young scientists in our community. Two McCoy students he has worked extensively with just returned from a week-long trip to Bratislava, Slovakia for the Expo-Sciences Internationale.
Rachel Brown and Katie van der Sloot began their science fair season at the MHC-hosted event earlier this spring and advanced to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Toronto in May. The duo won the Science for Peace and Development Award from the Canadian Commission for UNESCO for their project “Double Danger” on antibiotic-resistance bacteria and earned their spots on Team Canada.
The pair spent several days visiting exhibits from other attendees at the expo. Over 60 countries were represented, according to Brown.
“Because it was non-competitive, we were able to spend a lot of time viewing other students’ displays and meeting a lot of people from around the world,” said Rachel.
The duo also gained national attention this week with a mention on the David Suzuki Foundation’s blog. Author Ellen Dashwood focused heavily on the duo’s research on triclosan for a blog posted yesterday. The article “Coming clean on the risks of using antibacterial products” uses many of Brown and van der Sloot’s findings to back up the organization’s fight against triclosan, a product often used in antibacterial products.
Kids Having a Blast at Summer Camps
Almost 1,000 kids are spending the summer dressing up as princesses, digging 'dinosaur bones,' painting race cars or playing sports. Thanks to enthusiastic and energetic camp instructors, 965 children are making excellent use of their summer holidays.
"We do lots of fun stuff, we play games, we learn about exercise and we can be really hyper!" said one excited kid enrolled in a sports camp.
In Fairies in Flight (pictured above) girls aged five and six are encouraged to dress up for a week of make-believe stories, songs and crafts.
"This week's summer camp was really fun. I made new friends. We made fairy wings, fairy wands and fairies in a jar. The field trip to the park was fun, too!" said Fairies in Flight camper Sarah.
Gross Out Science and Scien-Twist appeal to the science lover who wants to go beyond the basics and add extra fun - and slime - to their learning experience.

Dara Sutton a Person to be Proud Of
As a single mother of two teenage boys, Dara sets an outstanding example of setting priorities and making education a goal to work toward.
“There is no way on the planet I could support my family and go to school and meet my goals without assistance,” said Dara. “College is a mainstay in our existence. My sons just know that when they finish high school they are pursuing post-secondary education.”
Dara is also heavily involved in student life, serving as a volunteer peer support advisor and holding various part-time positions around the college.
