Daily Planet Host Jay Ingram to Present at MHC
On March 30, Jay Ingram will be on campus sharing his lecture, The Prion Diaries - Fatal degenerative diseases in humans and animals. Prior to his presentation, several MHC students will also present on a variety of student research projects underway across our campus.

Status Report for Japan
The International Education department surveyed the situation in Japan in relation to our Japanese students on campus. We currently have no students whose hometown is north of Tokyo, thus I am relieved to report that no immediate family of any of our students was injured in this terrible event. However, we have alumnus who are from or currently living in the Sendai region. Our thoughts and emotional support is being extended to not only our alumnus today but to all the people of Japan who are suffering during this catastrophic event.
MHC Information Technology Survey Feedback Sessions
We had a great response to our recent IT services survey IT services in preparation for the next MHC Technology Plan. Please join us for a session where we will present survey results, and consider some themes that are evident in the results. We welcome you to provide further feedback and have your questions answered.

Software Requests Deadline Nearing
It's time to think ahead to the next academic year and prepare for new or updated software for instructional purposes.
ITS requests that instructors indicate to us your needs for software for the next year by April 15. The current software list is on SharePoint and can be viewed here http://winky/Dept/it/Software%20List/Software%20List.pdf
Information Technology Services is also gathering information on if you need to transition to Office 2010. If so, please contact Chrissie Mather.
As we start deploying new machines and configuring labs for the next year, it takes some weeks to order needed software and prepare images for the labs. We are going to start upgrading labs in June.
Our goal this year, as last year, will be to have all instructional labs ready with equipment and software by August 1. This will allow time in August for instructors to try lab machines and identify problems prior to the start of the academic term. Keep in mind, that in order for ITS to address lab software problems, at least 2 weeks is usually required; if problems in labs are not identified until late August, it may not be possible to resolve problems before the start of classes.

The College’s agreements on public performance of these types of materials stipulate that the College must record and report their usage. Reporting is simple, easy to do and it only takes a minute or two. Anyone using a video/DVD copy of a major motion picture or a videotape of a recorded television program (does not include use of television programs in commercially available prepackaged boxsets or the like) can use the handy paper form that is distributed with the audiovisual equipment or visit the Faculty Resource web page on the Library’s website (http://www.mhc.ab.ca/Library/Services/Faculty_Resources.aspx) and download the reporting form found there.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Contest
Rattlers Basketball is running an NCAA Tournament Bracket Contest. The cost is $10 and brackets can be picked up in the main Sport & Wellness Office or in the Weight Room. All brackets need to be returned by Thursday at 9 a.m. in Coach Ben Julius’ mailbox.
Project 50/50
Contribute $10 per month to Project 50/50, a fundraising initiative where half of the proceeds will go to one lucky draw winner each month, and half will go to the Students’ Greatest Needs Scholarship. Split the cheque for a great cause!
Getting involved is easy. Project 50/50 is open to staff, students, alumni and the community. Fill out a pledge form at Human Resources for automatic payroll deductions or drop off $10 at College Advancement before the last Friday of each month and you’ll automatically be entered in a public draw on the first Monday of every month. The more participants the bigger the pot so encourage others to get involved!

2011 Security Survey Results
Over the month of February the Student Association conducted a survey of students asking them to comment on the status of security at the college. A total of 89 students from 14 different programs completed the survey.
Of those surveyed, 91% viewed the college as safe or very safe. The issues that were commented on are ones the college is aware of and is working to resolve. Parking continues to be an irritant for many students. As our college continues to grow our parking lots are coming under increasing pressure. There are several changes happening this year which should alleviate that pressure for the next 3 - 4 years, (i.e. new parking lot, end of construction, increased Cultural centre use.)

NISOD Innovation Abstract: A Support Group for Students Who Stutter
In "A Support Group for Students Who Stutter," Joël Magloire, Communication Arts and Sciences Faculty Member, at CUNY Bronx Community College (NY), describes a special interactive, face-to-face support group of students who stutter, working weekly in collaboration on issues with which they must struggle and identifying ways of improving self-esteem, coping skills, and enthusiasm in social and academic settings.
