It is now the end of February and that means you only have one week left to nominate someone for the 2011 Employee Recognition Program! You can help make Medicine Hat College a great place to work by participating. All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.
Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:

Women's Basketball and Volleyball Teams Advance
There are just four teams remaining for the Rattlers with Futsal taking another week off before heading to Conference Championships. This weekend, our women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams will continue their quests in Conference Championship action. Women’s basketball will travel to Grande Prairie for a quarter final playoff series. The Rattlers are the number three seed from the South while the Wolves are the number seed from the North. The Rattlers fell to the Wolves 87-63 back in mid November. Women’s volleyball will look to remain hot as they travel to the Conference Championship tournament at Mount Royal. The women hold the number seven seed and will take on the number two seeded Grande Prairie Wolves in the first round. The Rattlers split with the Wolves back in early November. Phi Theta Kappa Sets New Record
The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society has been recognizing and encouraging academic excellence among community colleges since it was founded in 1918, through their hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. Medicine Hat College is recognized as the Alpha Tau Delta chapter, and was the very first college in Canada to charter a chapter with PTK.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Medicine Hat College’s involvement with PTK, and we are pleased to announce that we have had a record number of students who were invited and accepted into membership into Alpha Tau Delta. On March 1st, these students will be celebrating their academic achievements at an Induction Ceremony in the College Theatre beginning at 6:00 p.m. We encourage faculty to join us in honouring these students as we commemorate this occasion.

If you took a course at Medicine Hat College this year you will be receiving a T2202a form. Please note that you cannot claim tuition fees paid or reimbursed by your employer. NISOD Innovation Abstract: Engage your Students with Active Learning
In "It is Time to Move It, Move It: Engage your Students with Active Learning," by Ashley Alfaro, Speech Instructor, Tonya Blivens, Speech Instructor, Pert Durapau, Associate Professor of Speech/Drama, and Courtney Kopecky, Speech Instructor, at Tarrant County College, Southeast (TX), describes four activities that help get students involved in knowing each other better and mastering course content more quickly. These games make class times more fun, and students report that they look forward to being on time and participating in fun learning activities that cannot be duplicated outside of the classroom.

Registration for the 33rd annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, which will be held on May 29-June 1, 2011, in Austin, Texas, is now open. One Book One Community 2011
The One Book One Community committee is busy planning the 7th annual event for October 2011 and they need your help! Each event, the OBOC book to be read by all of Medicine Hat is selected from suggestions from the community.
During February 2011, the committee will be taking submissions via an online suggestion form and in person at the Vera Bracken Library, Medicine Hat College, the Medicine Hat Public Library and Coles Bookstore in Medicine Hat Mall. Suggested books should be by a Canadian author, available in paperback and substantial enough to generate discussion. Fiction, non-fiction, biography, short stories, or poetry suggestions are welcome. The suggested titles are read and evaluated by volunteer readers and the committee. Once the book has been chosen, the title will be announced in the spring.
