The old adage goes students are looking for one reason to turn around and walk right back out the door. Unfortunately, about half of all entering community college students walk out the door before their second year of college. As our expert panelists discuss the results of the 2009 Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE), learn how your college can design and implement proven strategies to promote student success and keep students on the right side of the door!

Mystery Night with Garry Ryan

Medicine Hat Public Library Theatre
The Medicine Hat Public Library and the Division of Arts, Medicine Hat College, present an evening with Calgary mystery writer, Garry Ryan. Garry Ryan will read from his novels, which include Queen’s Park, The Lucky Elephant Restaurant, A Hummingbird Dance, and Smoked (May 2010).
Following Garry's reading, he will join a panel of local mystery fan (including MHC's Sharon Allan and Ed Maruska) who will discuss their favourite mystery writers, the appeal of reading mysteries and the future of the genre. Book sales, signings, and a reception will follow in the Currie Room.

Dashiell Hammett brought the true story of two school teachers wrongly condemned for lesbianism by the lie of a spiteful student to Hellman’s notice. Her play has earned its place as one of the enduring works of the American Theatre. While it was shunned by the Pulitzer Prize selection committee for drama, the outrage at the play’s exclusion for that award sparked the creation of the Drama Critics Circle award to honour her achievement. This play is not recommended for children.

New paintings by Laara Cassells tackle the isolation and absorption of the generation dubbed ‘the intentionally disengaged’. Cassells juxtaposes images of youth and contemporary popular culture with a more historical portrait painting tradition, the equestrian portrait, celebrating both the disjuncture and the resonance between subjects and medium. e·strange runs from February 27 – April 11, 2010 at the Esplanade.
