On Campus News

Congratulations to Barb Banasch!

Forty years later and she still loves this place. Barb started working at MHC in 1970 and celebrated her 40th anniversary with the college last Friday.

"My training had been as a Ticket Agent for the airlines. Upon getting my “wings” at the airline training school in Kansas City, Missouri, I no longer wanted to leave Medicine Hat because I was dating Klaus Banasch, who later became my husband.

When I was hired at the college, I thought I would work a year or so to get some office experience. I found the college environment to be one that I really enjoyed. The staff and students were fun to be around and I literally grew up with former instructors like George Matthews and John Gallimore as well as with Terry Cooper and Laurie Milne who came to the college just shortly after I did.

Over the year my co-workers have made my job interesting and enjoyable. Keith Walker has been an incredible leader and makes me feel appreciated and valued. A really fun part was being involved in planning and moving to our wonderful new library.

I hope that I can continue being an asset to the college for a while longer."

MHC to offer business degree with Mount Royal University
Building on a history of collaboration, Mount Royal University and Medicine Hat College will sign an agreement today that will enable Medicine Hat College to deliver a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

The agreement will also develop a university transfer program in the Bachelor of Computer Information Systems, deliver Mount Royal General Education course at Medicine Hat College and explore future possibilities of joint programs, course delivery and scholarship on teaching and learning.

Both institutions will meet on a regular basis to plan and review activities and to coordinate future efforts.

“I’m very pleased to sign this agreement and begin working with one of Canada’s newest and most progressive universities, Weeks says. “When students leave the Medicine Hat region for education, they’re often looking to complete a degree. This agreement with Mount Royal will help those students by providing an opportunity to learn at home.”

2010 Employee Recognition Program
It is now February and that means it is time to kick off our 2010 Employee Recognition Program! You can help make Medicine Hat College a great place to work by participating! All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.

Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:

1. College Employee of the Year
2. Academic Achievement Award
3. Service Achievement Award
4. Innovation Award

Nomination and selection procedures, information regarding the criteria for each award, and nomination forms are available online here. Please feel free to contact Human Resources for further information. Nomination deadline is February 28, 2010.

Who will YOU nominate?

Smartboards Need Special Care
As the college continues to introduce more Smartboards, we would like to take the opportunity to review proper care of this technology. The Smartboard can be used as a whiteboard. Dry erase markers can be used on them. Some markers; however, are better to use than others and the best to use are the “Bold Color” ones.

When using a Smartboard as a whiteboard, please remember to use the standard “Bold Color” dry-erase markers, as they are less permanent. We also ask that you clean the boards regularly with the Expo Board Doctor solution, or Windex Glass Cleaner. The bookstore will be stocking all of the correct supplies.
If you have any questions or concerns about Smartboard usage, please contact the CallCentre at ext. 3899 or callcentre@mhc.ab.ca.

Thank you,
IT Services
