The Eresman Family Foundation has once again helped make MHC students’ dreams come true, passing out $80,000 in bursaries on Friday afternoon.
Friday’s recipients were the 25th – 28th students to receive the bursary, which was awarded for the first time in 2006. The criteria for the award include acceptance in the University Transfer Engineering or Commerce/Management program at MHC and financial need. Additionally, the student must be from the Medicine Hat area (Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Oyen, and Southwestern Saskatchewan). These bursaries were pledged from an initial $720,000 commitment from the Eresman Family Foundation.
The Eresman Family Foundation Bursary is funded by Randy and Shelly Eresman, who both began their studies at Medicine Hat College. The philanthropists started the bursary to allow as many local young people as possible the opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education.
“When Randy and I first decided to give, we knew it would be to education,” Shelly Eresman said at the event. “It has been so important for us moving forward. We wanted the young people of Medicine Hat to have the same opportunity that we had, and we know they can do it.”
The college also announced on Friday an additional donation from the Eresmans of $510,775. These funds will further support student endowments.
Since 2006, the Eresmans have donated $1,002,775 to MHC. Because of this level of generosity, MHC has renamed the college theatre the “Eresman Theatre.”
“A great deal more students will reap the benefits of an education because of the generosity of the Eresmans,” said Deanna Haysom, development officer. “We’ll now think of their kindness every time we walk in the theatre.”
Randy noted his affection for MHC during the theatre naming, describing the path he took toward education.
“Today we focus on education, and for much of our philanthropy, Medicine Hat College has been a recipient of it,” he said.
Homecoming weekend is quickly approaching! We are all looking forward to the festivities on September 15. But it wouldn’t be possible without your help! We’ll need several volunteers at 3:30 p.m. to help run the ATB Family Fun Zone, and we’ll have shifts throughout the night to assist in general concert operations. In return, we’ll provide you with a volunteer t-shirt and a meal voucher. Earl’s will be on hand for the event so you’re sure to have something good! And yes, the more the merrier, so if your spouse wants to lend a hand, sign him/her up too.

Are you looking for ways to inspire and encourage your students to be more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial?
For the second year in row, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is hosting the YOU Innovate Canada tournament in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week Canada. Taking place this fall, this tournament challenges Canadians over 16 years old (one to five people per team) to create as much value as they can, whether it be social, environmental, monetary or other, out of the secret object. Participants then submit a video explaining what they did. The top innovators will receive exciting awards!
YOU can bring this great learning experience to your students by:
• Integrating YOU Innovate Canada into any course you're teaching at a Canadian post-secondary institution or high school. Or,
• Promoting the tournament and encouraging students to participate independently.
We have compiled great educator resources to make it as easy as possible for you to incorporate YOU Innovate Canada into your courses for the fall. Note that you could plan to commit between two and four classrooms hours to it (this includes an introduction and an optional in-class film festival).
Applications open September 27th, 2012 along with the announcement of the top-secret object at the centre of this tournament. All submissions must be received by October 15th. Champions will be selected by our expert judging panel and through online public voting and will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 12th-18th).

Host families are paid $600/month and are required to be an English-speaking household and supply a private bedroom for their student. All students will arrive December 1, 2012, depart February 9, 2013 and attend McCoy High School during their time in Medicine Hat.
Vinicius is 16-years-old and has studied English for four years. He likes soccer, basketball, and football, and geography and is allergic to cats.
Jorge is 16-years-old and has studied English for seven years. He loves playing the drums, music, video games, soccer, skiing, and boxing. His favourite subjects are math and science.
