The soft seat area will receive a facelift this summer as part of the college’s agreement with the Students’ Association to provide a modern student space. In 2006, students participated in a referendum and voted in favour of donating $250,000 and committing additional funds over six years from the SA building fund to support the development of a student centre on campus.
As a result, the MHCSA has contributed $500,000 to the college which was matched by the provincial government for the Alumni Hall project.
The purpose of the contribution, as noted in promotional materials provided to students, was to expand and renovate the F-Wing to create a student common area that would include the Students’ Association office, soft seat area, student activity spaces, club offices, Rattler’s Den (now crave), meeting rooms, and cabaret and conference facilities. In addition to renovating the existing space, the Alumni Hall project will also encompass the area formerly known as the Poundmaker Room.
Much of this work has been completed through the F-Wing renovation and construction project, yet more work remains to address the purpose of the MHCSA gift. Amron will start construction at the beginning of July with a completion date slated for October 2012.
Cafeteria Closed
The cafeteria will be closed from Monday, June 25 until Tuesday, July 3 for regular cleaning and maintenance. Food and beverage items will be available this week at Starbucks. The cafeteria will re-open on Tuesday morning with summer hours from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Changes to Contract Services
MHC has two major service contracts (food and cleaning) that were due for renewal in 2012. Both services were put to tender and the college evaluated options based on value offered and cost.
As a result of these evaluations, Shooting Star has been retained as food service supplier; however, a new cleaning contractor – Bee Clean Building Maintenance – has been engaged. The existing contractor and their employees have been informed and the new contractor will interview current contract employees in the coming weeks. The change-over date for cleaning services is August 1.

Conservatory Dancers Head to Vegas
Medicine Hat College Conservatory dancers and instructors are travelling to one of the largest dance competitions in North America this weekend. Dance Power Las Vegas runs June 30 – July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and 101 college dancers will compete in the event.
