Academic advisor receives provincial recognitionDedicated. Enthusiastic. Committed to students. That’s how Jean Prysiazny is described by her closest colleagues and is why she recently received the 2012 Russ Guthrie Contribution to Student Services Award.
This award is presented by the Alberta Student Services Conference to an individual or group having five or more years of full-time experience at a post-secondary institution in Alberta in recognition of outstanding service to students. Innovations in program development or research, leadership with student services and participation on institution-wide, community, or provincial committees are just some of the criteria for this award.
Jean started at MHC in 2000 as an Academic Advisor/Case Manager in the Division of Adult Development and has worked in almost every aspect of advising since. In 2008, she was promoted to the position of Coordinator, Academic Advising and Recruitment. In this position, she was able to assist her case management team with the challenging implementation of Mobius, the province's new grant funding application software. During her time as coordinator, she was also able to lead her team through a difficult year of late funding with flying colours. In 2012, Jean decided to return to her roots and assumed the role of academic advisor for the Division of Business.
Jean is also actively involved within the Medicine Hat College community, serving on the Student Success Committee, the Campus Life Events Committee, and the Medicine Hat Interagency Committee. On the provincial front, she sits on the Post-Secondary Alberta Recruitment Managers Committee. Jean has been actively involved in the community and volunteers for several organizations including the Bridges Family Program and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She also works as a part-time lab instructor at MHC assisting students with communications skills.
“Jean brings passion, commitment, enthusiasm and genuine warmth to her position every day. Her ability to relate to her students and her desire to see them succeed is truly admirable,” said Stuart Riley. “We are honoured to call her a colleague and friend.”

Congratulations to Keith Walker for being inducted into the University of Lethbridge 2012 Alumni Honour Society. The former ‘King of Library Land’ has been recognized by his alma mater for the innovation and passion he brings to his profession. In addition to being the director of Library Services at MHC's and receiving several national awards, he was the first college librarian to serve as the president of the Canadian Library Association.

Non-Academic Staff Member of the Board of Governors
Eligible non-academic staff, as defined by the Post-secondary Learning Act, have selected the next non-academic staff member of the Board of Governors.
Matthew Read, Financial Services Manager, was selected to fill the currently vacant Board position. This vacancy occurred with the resignation of Jason MacDonald, the past non-academic staff member of the Board.
A letter has been forwarded to the Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education requesting the immediate appointment of Mr. Read. Once appointed, Matt will join the Board as its newest member.
Congratulations to Shirley Smeby, who has won $930 in May's Project 50/50 draw.
“What a nice surprise to return from Vegas and win the JACKPOT right here at Medicine Hat College,” said Shirley. “The project 50/50 is another great way staff can give back to the students with scholarships. I’m off shopping and I hope it’s your turn next month.”

Spring Clean Your Email
In the coming weeks, ITS will be installing new hardware (servers) to run MS Exchange which controls email and other Microsoft Outlook tools. This will involve moving data (lots of email, calendar appointments, contacts, tasks) from the old system to the new. This transition will be eased if we have less mail on the server to move. With that in mind please note the attached instructions explaining how to clean out your Outlook mail box, getting rid of deleted and junk email and organizing the mail to help you as you work. As always, we have technicians available through our Support Centre to explain or directly assist you in this. Call 403-529-3899 (local 3899), email callcentre@mhc.ab.ca or go online for assistance.
Instructors Share Art Overseas
Visual Communications instructors Poul Nielsen and Yulin Wang are prepping for an upcoming trip to China. The duo has once again been invited to show their paintings at the Jiangsu Academy of Chinese Painting. This will mark their 8th exhibition at the academy, known as the oldest painting college in China.
The show, entitled “East Meets West,” goes from June 22 – July 6 and includes five artists from the United States, eight from China, and MHC’s duo representing Canada.
Nielsen and Wang will also be doing presentations at Nanjing Normal University showcasing their own work, as well as MHC student work.

YOU Innovate Canada – Challenge your students to innovate!
Are you looking for ways to inspire and encourage your students to be more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial?
For the second year in row, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) is hosting the YOU Innovate Canada tournament in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week Canada. Taking place this fall, this tournament challenges Canadians over 16 years old (one to five people per team) to create as much value as they can, whether it be social, environmental, monetary or other, out of the secret object. Participants then submit a video explaining what they did. The top innovators will receive exciting awards!
YOU can bring this great learning experience to your students by:
- Integrating YOU Innovate Canada into any course you're teaching at a Canadian post-secondary institution or high school. Or,
- Promoting the tournament and encouraging students to participate independently
Applications open September 27, 2012 along with the announcement of the top-secret object at the centre of this tournament. All submissions must be received by October 15. Champions will be selected by our expert judging panel and through online public voting and will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 12-18).

Not sure how to keep your kids busy over the summer months? Register them in the many exciting summer programs offered through Continuing Studies at MHC. Choose from a wide variety of arts, science and sports programs, or check out special theme programs like Cooking with Strawberry Shortcake or Superheroes Camp. Camps are also offered for children ages 3-5.
If you are a full-time faculty member, full-time regular support staff, or full-time administrator, you may be eligible for a partial tuition waiver for these programs. Click here for more information. Eligible employees must get their tuition waiver from HR before registering their children at the registration desk.
