Cautious spending and careful stewardship of resources were key messages in the 2012-2013 budget that was approved by the Board of Governors and presented to the college community last week.
Some of the highlights of this $54 million budget plan include:
- 2% Campus Alberta grant increase for 2012-2013
- Budget based on 2,570 full-load equivalent (FLE) students and overall credit tuition fee increase of 1.45%
- Increase of 2.64 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees (for a total of 442.76 FTEs). Salaries and benefits account for 63.5% of total budget
- Operating surplus of $212,000
- Projected restricted and unrestricted reserve balance in excess of $12.3 million at June 30, 2013
- Capital projects approved in the 2012-2013 budget are the college trail system, digital signage project and visual communications relocation project
Fall Enrolment & Registration Update
Applications are up at MHC for the fall semester with a 6.5% increase over this time last year. As of May 15, 2012 the college has received 1,763 applications; however, the increases tend to be in programs that are already oversubscribed.
New for students in the 2012-2013 academic year is the opportunity to register for a full year of classes. Additional registration supports have also been put in place to assist students through the process, including group registration sessions and an online support centre.
Shane Longley has some unusual plans for his birthday this year. In addition to celebrating the special day with his parents, this recent police and security grad will be slipping on a pair of red high heels in support of the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event at the annual Spectrum Festival next month.
Longley, who is currently on staff at crave, became aware of the event through his involvement with the Students’ Association and felt it was an opportunity to be a positive influence on his fellow classmates and help make Medicine Hat a better place to live.
“I hope people find their own way to better the community,” said Longley, whether it’s by walking a mile or getting involved in other local events.
The “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Campaign” is an annual fundraising event held by the Sexual Assault Response Committee (SARC) to help end sexual assault and sexual abuse, and violence against women. This event is in its fourth year in Medicine Hat and is taking place on June 2, 2012 at 2 p.m. in Veterans’ Memorial Park Band Shell during the Medicine Hat Spectrum Festival. This event asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes.
“It is certainly not easy walking in these shoes, but it is fun and it gets the community to talk about something that is often difficult to talk about: gender relations and sexual violence,” said Dara Sutton, peer support coordinator in the Students’ Association. “It is a celebration of survival and perseverance while bringing men into the voice of action."
If you are interested in supporting Longley in his mile-long walk, donations can be made at the Students’ Association Office.

June Bookstore Hours
The Bookstore hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Monday to Friday) during the month of June with the exception of June 1, when it will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate Convocation activities.
Convocation Volunteers Needed
Medicine Hat College will celebrate Convocation 2012 on Friday, June 1. Ushers, greeters, and student marshalls are needed to make the ceremonies run smoothly. It’s Not Easy Being Green – Departmental Challenge
Employees are encouraged to be green in the days ahead in the lead up to the college's annual Environmental Week running June 3-9. Staff and faculty can challenge themselves ‘At Home, At Work or On the Go’ by taking on one or all of the tasks listed on the environmental challenge spreadsheets.

In addition to tackling challenges like shortening shower times and composting food waste, participants are also encouraged to keep a tally of their mileage while walking/biking to and from work, walking the inside trail on campus (see interior map) and walking the outside trail on campus (see exterior map). Need to boost your departmental green factor? Join Rodger for a guided walk of the inside trail this Wednesday at noon.
Total mileage for each department will be tallied and the winning department will have a tree planted on the ‘soon to be constructed’ campus trail with a plaque listing them as the winner of the 2012 Environment Challenge. They will also provide a home for Kermit for the year and the department will be treated to lunch.
