The Visual Communications program is now one step closer to its long-awaited goal of moving into a new facility. The Board of Governors approved the program’s relocation project last month which will see a renovation and expansion of the Cultural Centre over the next two years.
“Exciting times, change and growth, and continued success for students await this fine program at the cusp of a new and long awaited facility,” says Len Vandervaart, dean of arts. “Where better to relocate the program to than to the Cultural Centre, where music, dance, drama and fine arts of all kinds are already present?”
The infrastructure currently in place was meant to house the program temporarily and is no longer suitable for this purpose, making this project a number one priority for Medicine Hat College. The cost of the project is estimated at $7.3 million with funding provided by monies carried over from 2010-2011 budget, restricted net assets (VC area), Access to the Future Funds, and funding from Advanced Education and Technology.
Other capital projects approved by the Board of Governors include the addition of a sport and wellness centre, enclosure of the central courtyard and rejuvenation of the SA Soft Seat Area, and a Brooks Campus addition.
June Bookstore Hours
The Bookstore will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Monday to Friday) during the month of June with the exception of June 1. The Bookstore will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate Convocation activities.

Medicine Hat College will celebrate Convocation 2012 on Friday, June 1. Ushers, greeters, and student marshalls are needed to make the ceremonies run smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering at the morning, afternoon, or both ceremonies, please send an email Colleen Graham at cgraham@mhc.ab.ca. It’s Not Easy Being Green – Departmental Challenge
Employees are encouraged to be green in the days ahead in the lead up to the college's annual Environmental Week running June 3-9. Staff and faculty can challenge themselves ‘At Home, At Work or On the Go’ by taking on one or all of the tasks listed on the environmental challenge spreadsheets that were distributed to departments last week. There will be a prize for the person who tackles the most ‘green’ challenges.
In addition to tackling challenges like shortening shower times and composting food waste, participants are also encouraged to keep a tally of their mileage while walking/biking to and from work, walking the inside trail on campus (see interior map) and walking the outside trail on campus (see exterior map). To track your progress more easily, participants can download a free pedometer app to their cell phone. Everyone is invited to meet with Rodger on Tuesday at noon in Centennial Hall to walk the internal and external trails. Participants will receive one of the cool, new MHC pedometers.
They will also provide a home for Kermit for the year and the department will be treated to lunch.

Seize the Summer!
Not sure how to keep your kids busy over the summer months? Register them in the many exciting summer programs offered through Continuing Studies at MHC. Choose from a wide variety of arts, science and sports programs, or check out special theme programs like Cooking with Strawberry Shortcake or Superheroes Camp. Camps are also offered for children ages 3-5.
Crave is now operating on summer hours and will be open from noon to 3 p.m. during the week. However, in response to employee requests, the campus pub and grill will be extending its Friday hours until 5 p.m. with a special promo called "Thank Goodness I'm Faculty and Staff" (TGIFS) for college employees. Come out and try their new summer menu and take advantage of TGIFS specials including a beverage special and 10% appetizer discount between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday hours may be extended if turnout is high.
If participation and interest is good, this promotion may continue through the summer and fall months.
