“This is a significant day for programming at Medicine Hat College’s Brooks campus,” said Linda Schwartz, vice president of academic. “We are serving Brooks students in a unique way, enabling them to access quality, first-year university courses right where they live.”
My First Year is considered to be a groundbreaking cohort model of education. Once students are admitted into the My First Year program, they will enroll in the ten courses collectively over two semesters.
This fall will also mark the return of the Administrative Office Professional program (formerly Office Technology). Pre-employment trades programming is also available, beginning with electrical at the end of April. Another highly regarded program at MHC Brooks, Health Care Aide, will see its next intake in January 2013.

Giles Woodward Wins Project 50/50

Job Fair Success
Lastly, thank you to the faculty who sent students to the event. Congratulations goes out to Russ Krasniuk who is the winner of the Networking Contest. His ETOL students collected the most Exhibitors' Choice ballots, which means Russ is the lucky recipient of a Kobo E-Reader. Exhibitors were directed to give out special ballots to any students whom they felt networked well and engaged them in genuine and meaningful conversations about their organizations and job opportunities. Marla Middleton Freitag was the runner-up and receives a lovely piece from Medalta Potteries.
The students who won the Exhibitors' Choice draws were Michelle Aspinall (Office Technology), Honey Froom (Business Administration), and Michael King (Ecotourism). They all won personal video gaming systems. Other prizes that were given out include MHC T-shirts and baseball caps.

Residence Incident Update
The college continues to monitor the status of former student Dustin Satterthwaite, the individual taken into custody following the incidence of violence at the Golfview Residences in February. The most recent court date occurred on March 1. The suspect appeared via video conference from Calgary, and the case was adjourned until March 15. We will continue to monitor the case and will provide additional information as required. Please be assured that the safety of students and employees is paramount.
Geek Turns 5!
Educational Technology Services is once again looking for technology enthused educators willing to share some of the techniques they use for integrating technology with teaching and learning at Medicine Hat College during the 2012 Geekapalooza event this August 23rd.
Sessions for Geekapalooza should be between 20 - 30 minutes long, and must pertain to the use of technology in education. These sessions are not intended as training, but rather engaging information sessions. Presenters will be given an event t-shirt, a special swag bag full of goodies, as well as a chance to win a prize intended for presenters only.
Not only are we looking for presenters, but we are also looking for volunteers to help with various duties including Session Hosts and Kiosk Attendants. Although the event runs from 10am-3pm, we will arrange to accommodate any schedule including those wanting to attend sessions during the day. Volunteers will be guaranteed an event swag bag and will be given specific guidance on their individual responsibilities in the days leading up to the event.

Veerpaul Bhullar Library User of the Month
"Regarding any library, one may think of it as a place meant just for studies and without any excitement or fun. But for me as an international student from India, the Vera Bracken Library in our college is just like a home for me where I relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, spend time doing assignments, solving problems, making new friends and feeling at home. The staff in the library is really helpful and cooperative towards students. I learnt a lot from them and get solutions to many of my problems there. The environment as well as the deliberate layout of the library is very positive and inviting.
I feel great to be selected as the library user of the month and want to express my gratitude towards the library staff for their endless efforts in creating and maintaining a positive learning atmosphere for all the students.”
Electronics Recycling
Yes, it's that time of year again; the Saamis Rotary Club will be conducting its annual electronics recycling in May. The college will accept any old electronics or small appliances.(No major appliances or console TVs). Items can be dropped off at the loading bay near facility operations during regular business hours from now until mid-May.
