Enjoy Performances at Magic of Music Master Class

Students at the Medicine Hat College Conservatory of Music & Dance have an opportunity to study with world-class instructors this week thanks to the Magic of Music master class. This is a three-day intensive musical training program that was brought courtesy of Brenda Lea & Ken MacPhail.

The class is open to students in the piano, vocal and strings disciplines and provides an excellent opportunity for them to work on and their festival repertoire.

Each day ends with a multi-discipline performance. Performers will be selected by the master class instructors. The community can come out and enjoy the daily performances 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

MHC Supporting Hockey Day in Canada Bid

Have you heard? The City of Medicine Hat is putting a bid in to CBC to become the host city of Hockey Day in Canada 2013! Should our city be selected, Medicine Hat College will be on board to support the event. A few members of our staff will be working with the city to determine the college’s involvement. We will keep you up to date if our city is chosen; we will undoubtedly need the support of our amazing faculty and staff in the planning efforts.

On top of being named Player of the Year, Nagy was also named to the ACAC All-Conference Team for the third consecutive year.

Parking at a Premium This Week

Due to the teachers' convention and volleyball tournament at the end of the week, parking will be at premium on Thursday and Friday. As the weather looks to be great for February, why not plan to walk to work?  If you must drive, please avoid the front lots and use the Cultural Centre if at all possible. Parking permits will not be required for these two days.

Weight Room Closures

Please be advised the weight room will be closed for Knes 281 Lab on March 5, 7, 26 and 28 from 3:20 to 4:50 p.m.

Have You Met TED?

If you have experienced TED in person, Keith MacMillan (ETS) needs to know.  Those in the loop will know that TED Talks are intriguing opportunities to share concepts and ideas (see http://www.ted.com/).  Keith is working on an initiative and would appreciate contact from anyone who has paid for and attended a TED event.

Update of Residence Incident

As a brief update to campus staff and faculty, we have been informed the accused in the residence incident has been transferred to Calgary for a 30-day psychiatric assessment. He is then brought before the court for a bail hearing, sometime near the middle of March where he will likely remain in custody until his trial.

If the accused is released on bail, the college will be notified immediately and patrols will increased at the college and particularly in the residence area.

We would like to know how we did keeping staff and students informed during this incident. Should the college face an incident in the future, what would you like to see, if anything, done differently in terms of communication and updates? Click here to share your feedback.

One Book One Community

The One Book One Community committee is busy planning our next event for October 2012 and they need your help. Each year, the OBOC book to be read by all of Medicine Hat is selected from suggestions from the community.

During February 2012, we will be taking submissions via our online suggestion form, in person at the Vera Bracken Library, Medicine Hat Public Library, and Coles the Book People in the Medicine Hat Mall.

We require the book be Canadian, available in paperback format and substantial enough to generate discussion and debate. Fiction and non-fiction titles are welcome.

Check out the OBOC website, subscribe to our blog, join our Facebook page and stay tuned for events in October 2012. For more information, contact Leigh Cunningham at 403.504.3654 or obocmh@gmail.com.

2012 Employee Recognition Awards

It is time to kick off our 2012 Employee Recognition Program. You can help make MHC a great place to work by participating. All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.

Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:

College Employee of the Year
Academic Achievement
Service Achievement
Innovation Award

Nomination and selection procedures, information regarding the criteria for each award, and nomination forms are available online here. Please feel free to contact Human Resources for further information. Nomination deadline is February 29. Who will YOU nominate?

NISOD Innovation Abstract

In “An Ounce of Prevention: Improving College Readiness as a Strategy Toward College Completion,” Alison Douglas, Professor of English, and Director of Alliance for College Readiness, and Julie Schaid, Associate Dean, College Readiness and School Partnerships, describe a partnership forged to make students college ready before they enroll in their first courses on campus. The large majority of the Summer Bridge program completers place into higher-level courses than their entry test scores recommended, many avoiding developmental courses altogether and enrolling in college-level courses for which they are now prepared.
