The college will hold its first-ever lockdown drill on January 25 at 11:30 a.m. *Please note the time change* As this is the first time employees and college users will have experienced a lockdown drill, please ensure everyone in your area is informed of this event. Employees are reminded to review the procedure for a lockdown found in the “Individual Emergency response procedures” booklet.
The goal of any lockdown is to present fewer opportunities to the person threatening harm to college users. There are many areas on campus where getting behind a locked door is not possible.
Everyone should:
- Move out of public areas
- Get behind a closed door
- Secure the room
- Silence all cell phones
- Stay still and quiet
Emergency broadcast system – This system is now operational and will alert all college users on the appropriate action to take in the event of an emergency. Please listen and obey the directions provided. If you have questions or concerns please contact the EHS office by emailing rsloan@mhc.ab.ca.
MHC Networking Contest
Think you’ve taught your students everything there is to know about networking? Well, here’s your chance to prove it and win an e-reader in the process. In conjunction with the Spring Job Fair on Wednesday, February 29, Career Services is running its first Networking Contest.
How does it work? Bring your students to the Job Fair and encourage them to network with the employers in attendance. The employers will all have an allotment of Exhibitor's Choice ballots they can give out to students they feel networked well and engaged them in genuine and meaningful conversation. On the ballot, it will ask the student the usual raffle contact info, along with the name of their instructor. The instructor whose name appeared on the most ballots will be the lucky winner of an e-reader. Remember, only the students the employers feel networked well with them will receive a ballot. In addition, the lucky students who receive an Exhibitor's Choice ballot will have their names entered into the draw to win one of three grand prizes. The more they successfully network, the more ballots they receive.

Ryan Toews Library User of the Month
The Vera Bracken library has named Ryan Toews the library user of the month for January. Here is what Ryan had to say:
“I am currently in my third year of the Bachelor of Nursing program at the Medicine Hat College. I have incorporated a variety of UT Science classes into my degree, as upon completion, I plan on furthering my education through a Doctor of Medicine program. Apart from coursework, I am involved in multiple volunteering events and am president of the Science and Engineering Undergraduate Society (SEUS).
The Vera Bracken Library has been my home for the past three years, and without it, I would not be where I am today. I have utilized many of the resources available through the library, such as online databases, A.V. equipment, referencing guidelines and above all, the studying areas. I would like to express my gratitude towards the library staff for creating a positive learning environment through their accommodating and compassionate attitudes."

Business Retention and Expansion Research Project
Researchers at MHC are partnering with Mount Royal University to conduct local research aimed at helping small business owners in the region.
“We want to help small businesses figure out their barriers to growth,” said Miranda Davies, business instructor and lead researcher. “We know that entrepreneurship is a main component in creating new jobs, and we want to know how small businesses can be assisted in succeeding.”
Davies is working with lead project manager Jon Sookocheff and a student research assistant to recruit 80 small businesses to fill out the survey. The survey is targeted at independently owned and operated small businesses located in Medicine Hat.
Once community surveys are completed, they will be sent to MRU for statistical analysis. The MHC research team plans on surveying four communities in our region over the course of the three-year study, beginning with Medicine Hat.
Once the results for Medicine Hat are compiled, business owners who have completed the survey are invited to attend an information session to learn the results. The research team also plans to host at least two training sessions for small business owners who have completed the survey.
Sybil Mahoney Named Entrepreneur of the Month
Healing Hands is currently based out of Mahoney's house and also features a mobile home-visit option. In the future, Mahoney hopes to start an alternative health-care retreat in town with infrared saunas, foot detoxification, hot tubs and a bistro cafe.
"It can be daunting to start a business when you don't know what to do but the EDC provides a no-fail recipe for small business ownership," said Mahoney, who was the first recipient of a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by JMH & Co.
NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Softening Student Stress"
In “Softening Student Stress,” Michael Salerno, English Instructor, at Wallace State Community College (AL), describes strategies for helping students relax in the classroom, approach their speaking assignments with less trepidation, and become more focused by aiming to complete one task at a time and avoid being overwhelmed by too many challenges at once.
