In the past few months, Medicine Hat College has been paying additional attention to enrolment management. Many of you have seen Ken Steele’s presentations which provided information about the changing world of post-secondary education as well as data about this college. In November the college invited Dr. Jim Black and Dr. Lynda Wallace-Hulecki, both of SEM Works, to conduct a comprehensive audit of our practices.
The results of that audit were shared on campus through a live webinar in December. A recording of that session is available by clicking here. You will hear SEM Works share student perceptions and their own observations of strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for positive development. There’s little doubt that you will be both encouraged and challenged by the observations of these experts.
Please note that this presentation is not the end of a process. It is in fact just the beginning of a focused effort to create an even better experience for our students.
Your attention and contributions are appreciated.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign...
The college is adopting a new look and feel for all campus signage and you have an opportunity to pick your favorite style. Visit the Poundmaker Room anytime from January 9 to 20 to view the proposed sign styles. You’ll find little sticker dots in the room; make your choice known my placing a single dot on the perimeter of the design set that you prefer. The style selected will be used for all future signs ranging from the highway frontage to office and room doors.
Transition Plan for Sport and Wellness
With the departure of Kelly Almer, former manager of Sport and Wellness, certain changes have taken place during the transition period.
In the interim, Zakk Morrison and Benj Heinrichs are taking on added responsibilities.
Zakk will assume responsibility for general administrative functions in Sports and Wellness. This includes maintaining efficient operation of the Sport and Wellness Centers, recreation and events, and recreational facilities, supervising all support positions, and administering the budget, College’s collective agreements, and policies and procedures.
Benj will assume responsibility for the Rattlers’ athletic teams. This includes coordinating and attending Rattlers Coach meetings, administering policies and procedures of the ACAC and CCAA, overseeing Rattlers’ event promotions and media, and maintaining sponsorship and fundraising programs.
These plans will be in place until the best structure for Sport and Wellness is determined.
New Fitness Schedule
Be Fit For Life released its winter 2012 schedule for noon-hour and after-work fitness classes. A few changes were made to the schedule to offer staff and students variety and a fun exercise experience.
Yoga, Zumba, Qi Gong, Turbo Kick and Cardio Mix remain in the schedule, although times and/or instructors may have changed. Thursday's after work class is a new option: Hip Hop Hustle.
After work classes are now held at 4:15, not 4:45, based on staff feedback. Classes will be held in H131 and begin January 16. Click here to view the entire schedule.
Automotive Program Looking for Vehicles
The automotive program will be taking vehicles for our AST third-year tune up and electrical repair session for January and February. Please fill out the attached work order and return it to Ray Shannon in the trades department. Ray will contact you when there is an opening.
Please note we are only performing work related to charging and starting system repairs and testing, (including batteries), general engine tune up, electrical repairs, and any “check engine" or "service engine soon” warning lamps that may be turning on in a vehicle.
New Edition of real Out Now
The new year means a new edition of real. The feature story in real is an in-depth look at simulation learning in health studies.
Other stories include a Q&A with Zakk Morrison, a highlight of the Trail and Trees project and a feature on entrepreneur and Vis Comm alumna Cherie Johnson, who is taking her tattoo business on the road in a mobile tattoo trailer.

MHC Amazing Race
On Dec. 21 employees from the Student and College Services division met for a fun-filled PD activity. MHC’s Amazing Race consisted of 16 teams who completed several activities from each department. Participants learned how to use the library effectively, assemble a computer and track an IT service call, and much more. All the teams worked hard but the winning team consisted of Mark Keller (Advancement), Scott Moore (ITS), Tafadzwa Bamhare (Student Services), Patrick Sharp (Library) and Connie Groves (Student Services).
It was the first time the newly formed division came together as a group and there were many accolades for the hard-working team who organized the event. The Student and College Services team looks forward to working together even more!
Trial of Evening IT Support Centre Hours
Based on feedback received last year as we developed the MHC Technology Plan, we will evaluate the demand for evening IT Support Services. For the winter 2011 academic term we will expand support centre hours until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We will track the number and the type of service requests we get during the evenings to determine if the demand warrants a permanent allocation of additional resources to support evening service.
Starting Tuesday, January 3 the IT Support Centre will be staffed for walk-up, phone, and email support until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
To report technology problems, or for assistance, please contact the IT Support Centre.
