Garrett Flaig Wins Project 50/50

Congratulations to Garrett Flaig, educational assistant with the division of adult development, for winning Project 50/50 in December. Garrett has a cool $720 to spend.

"What an awesome surprise to win the 50/50 draw right before the Christmas break! A little Christmas bonus for myself! I'd like to say thanks to the Medicine Hat College foundation for putting this 50/50 draw together! What a great way to help students and have some fun at the same time!"said Flaig.

In total, 144 people participated in the December draw, nine more than the month previous. We are now raising more than $700 a month for the Students' Greatest Need scholarship. Sign up now for January's Project 50/50 draw and you may walk away with more than $700 in February!

Thanks to everyone who participated. To get in on the action for January, fill out a payroll deduction form at Human Resources.


MHC Amazing Race

On Dec. 21 employees from the Student and College Services division met for a fun-filled PD activity. MHC’s Amazing Race consisted of 16 teams who completed several activities from each department. Participants learned how to use the library effectively, assemble a computer and track an IT service call, and much more. All the teams worked hard but the winning team consisted of Mark Keller (Advancement), Scott Moore (ITS), Tafadzwa Bamhare (Student Services), Patrick Sharp (Library) and Connie Groves (Student Services).

It was the first time the newly formed division came together as a group and there were many accolades for the hard-working team who organized the event. The Student and College Services team looks forward to working together even more!

 
Trial of Evening IT Support Centre Hours


Based on feedback received last year as we developed the MHC Technology Plan, we will evaluate the demand for evening IT Support Services. For the winter 2011 academic term we will expand support centre hours until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. We will track the number and the type of service requests we get during the evenings to determine if the demand warrants a permanent allocation of additional resources to support evening service.

Starting Tuesday, January 3 the IT Support Centre will be staffed for walk-up, phone, and email support until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Innovation and Scholarship Small Grants Competition

Four proposals have been chosen for the Innovation and Scholarship Small Grants competition. Seven proposals were submitted from a variety of academic and non-academic staff.

A mix of faculty and management peers conducted a blind assessment of the proposals by ranking each project according to submission criteria and providing helpful comments that suggested improvements and ideas for enhanced supports and outcomes.

These innovation/scholarship projects will be undertaken during the winter/spring semesters, with the support of the office of Innovation and Scholarship. They are:

Important Changes to Canada Pension Plan

Changes are being introduced to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) starting January 1, 2012. If you are aged 60 to 69 and currently receive a CPP retirement pension these changes will affect you as follows:
  • Aged 60 to 64 and receiving CPP retirement pension: CPP contributions will be deducted from your pay starting January 2012
  • Aged 65 to 70 and receiving CPP retirement pension: CPP contributions will be deducted from your pay starting January 2012 unless you “elect” to stop contributing to the Canada Pension Plan

NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Giving Shy Speakers the Strength to Get Up and do What Needs to be Done"

In “Giving Shy Speakers the Strength To Get Up and Do What Needs To Be Done,” Phillip Venditti, Instructor, Speech Communication, at Clover Park Technical College (WA), describes a successful strategy for helping current students connect with former students for advice and counsel. Former students return by email and in person to share experiences, provide instruction, and generally engage current students, renew attachments to the college, and find that their résumés may be enhanced by this special brand of community service.
