In the past few months, Medicine Hat College has been paying additional attention to enrolment management. Many of you have seen Ken Steele’s presentations which provided information about the changing world of post-secondary education as well as data about this college. In November the college invited Dr. Jim Black and Dr. Lynda Wallace-Hulecki, both of SEM Works, to conduct a comprehensive audit of our practices.
You’re encouraged to learn the results of that audit by attending a webinar that begins at 2:30 pm on Tuesday December 20 in S159. SEM Works will share student perceptions and their own observations of strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for positive development. There’s little doubt that you will be both encouraged and challenged by the observations of these experts.
Please note that this presentation is not the end of a process. It is in fact just the beginning of a focused effort to create an even better experience for our students.

Innovation and Scholarship Small Grants Competition
Four proposals have been chosen for the Innovation and Scholarship Small Grants competition. Seven proposals were submitted from a variety of academic and non-academic staff.
A mix of faculty and management peers conducted a blind assessment of the proposals by ranking each project according to submission criteria and providing helpful comments that suggested improvements and ideas for enhanced supports and outcomes.
These innovation/scholarship projects will be undertaken during the winter/spring semesters, with the support of the office of Innovation and Scholarship. They are:

Important Changes to Canada Pension Plan
Changes are being introduced to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) starting January 1, 2012. If you are aged 60 to 69 and currently receive a CPP retirement pension these changes will affect you as follows:
- Aged 60 to 64 and receiving CPP retirement pension: CPP contributions will be deducted from your pay starting January 2012
- Aged 65 to 70 and receiving CPP retirement pension: CPP contributions will be deducted from your pay starting January 2012 unless you “elect” to stop contributing to the Canada Pension Plan

Joe Grove Wins Project 50/50
"Wow, what a nice surprise to win the Project 50/50 draw just in time for Christmas shopping. Thank you to the Medicine Hat College Foundation for doing this draw. This is a great way to help students and have some fun," said Grove.
In total, 135 people participated in the November draw, 21 more than the month previous. We are now raising almost $700 a month for the Students' Greatest Need scholarship. Sign up now for December's Project 50/50 draw and you may walk away with more than $700 in January!

WHMIS Audit
The first 3 people who email me what the acronyms “WHMIS” and “GHS” stand for win a prize!
As an ongoing effort to improve health and safety at the college, the EHS office will be conducting a review of how chemicals are handled in our workplace over the next two weeks. Consumer products are not included (ie, Windex, WD40.) Please check your worksite for the following:
1. Are all chemicals labelled appropriately or in their original packaging?
2. Do all of your non-consumer products have an MSDS sheet? (including printer toner!)
3. Does your lab have a binder with all of the MSDS sheets for the chemicals in use? Are they up to date? (contact your supplier)
If you have answered “no” or are unsure, please contact your department tech (first) or Rodger Sloan.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Giving Shy Speakers the Strength to Get Up and do What Needs to be Done"
In “Giving Shy Speakers the Strength To Get Up and Do What Needs To Be Done,” Phillip Venditti, Instructor, Speech Communication, at Clover Park Technical College (WA), describes a successful strategy for helping current students connect with former students for advice and counsel. Former students return by email and in person to share experiences, provide instruction, and generally engage current students, renew attachments to the college, and find that their résumés may be enhanced by this special brand of community service.
