Joe Grove Wins Project 50/50
"Wow, what a nice surprise to win the Project 50/50 draw just in time for Christmas shopping. Thank you to the Medicine Hat College Foundation for doing this draw. This is a great way to help students and have some fun," said Grove.
In total, 135 people participated in the November draw, 21 more than the month previous. We are now raising almost $700 a month for the Students' Greatest Need scholarship. Sign up now for December's Project 50/50 draw and you may walk away with more than $700 in January!
Thanks to everyone who participated. To get in on the action for December, fill out a payroll deduction form at Human Resources.

Poul Nielsen, a visual communications instructor, has a showcase of his painting and drawings at the Cultural Centre Gallery.
The show runs from December 1 to 30 with a reception December 8 at 7:30 p.m.

As an ongoing effort to improve health and safety at the college, the EHS office will be conducting a review of how chemicals are handled in our workplace over the next two weeks. Consumer products are not included (ie, Windex, WD40.) Please check your worksite for the following:
1. Are all chemicals labelled appropriately or in their original packaging?
2. Do all of your non-consumer products have an MSDS sheet? (including printer toner!)
3. Does your lab have a binder with all of the MSDS sheets for the chemicals in use? Are they up to date? (contact your supplier)
If you have answered “no” or are unsure, please contact your department tech (first) or Rodger Sloan.

Christmas Tree Decorating Contest
Campus Life Events is asking different departments that wish to participate to decorate their tree for the festive season. On December 12, judges will tour the campus and award the winner with an engraved Christmas tree ornament to display, as well as special ice cream cake. The judging will take place at 10 a.m.
Last year’s winning tree belonged to the finance department. They set the bar high so it’s up to the rest of you to ramp up the decorations. If your department is competing, email Stuart Riley.
Automotive Program Looking for Vehicles
The automotive program will be taking vehicles for our AST third-year tune up and electrical repair session beginning in January. Please fill out the attached work order and return it to Ray Shannon in the trades department. Ray will contact you when there is an opening.
Please note we are only performing work related to charging and starting system repairs and testing, (including batteries), general engine tune up, electrical repairs, and any “check engine" or "service engine soon” warning lamps that may be turning on in a vehicle.
Celebrating the Generosity of Scholarship Donors
Last week, MHC celebrated the generosity of individuals and businesses behind the many scholarships and bursaries provided on campus. Donors and recipients were invited to attend a lunch to get to know one another and recognize the incredible impact these contributions have in the lives of students.
President Ralph Weeks' column in the Medicine Hat News centred on this event. In part it said:
The words of our students likely have more impact than my own, so I’d like to share some quotes from the hundreds of letters recipients sent to award donors this year.
One student writes, “I am aware that the goals I have set are not easy, nor inexpensive, but thanks to the generosity of people like you, and some hard work and dedication on my part, I hope to one day achieve my goals.”
Another offers recognition that our donors offer resources based on their values. “I have a great belief in education, and knowing that other people who feel the same, and want to help, makes me even more grateful.”

The MHC United Way Payroll Campaign collected $6,178 over the past several weeks. Thanks to everyone who contributed; know that your donation will improve the lives of people living in Medicine Hat.

In “Giving Shy Speakers the Strength To Get Up and Do What Needs To Be Done,” Phillip Venditti, Instructor, Speech Communication, at Clover Park Technical College (WA), describes a successful strategy for helping current students connect with former students for advice and counsel. Former students return by email and in person to share experiences, provide instruction, and generally engage current students, renew attachments to the college, and find that their résumés may be enhanced by this special brand of community service.
