Randee Cheverie Wins Project 50/50
Congratulations to Randee Cheverie, administrative assistant to Dr. Linda Schwartz. Randee won October's Project 50/50 draw, taking away $570 - the biggest pot yet!
"When I signed up to participate in the 50/50 Project I didn’t even consider the possibility of winning. Instead, I viewed it as an opportunity to personally invest in and support students that I work to serve on a professional level. But now I’m going shopping!!" said Randee.
Dr. Nora Way, the dean of the division of health studies, won the second draw for a pair of Calgary Flames tickets.
Fund developer Deanna Haysom was aiming for 100 participants in October. In total, 114 people participated in the October draw. We are now raising more than $500 a month for the Students' Greatest Need scholarship.
Thanks to everyone who participated. To get in on the action for November, fill out a payroll deduction form at Human Resources.

Gerrit Kat Named Entrepreneur of the Month
It was an almost natural step for the third-generation Kat entrepreneur to use that passion and talent to start his own business, Ginger Kid Studios.
A few months after buying a business licence and purchasing basic equipment, Kat was introduced to Jon Sookochef at the Entrepreneur Development Centre and received funding and mentoring from JMH & Co.
“Of course as strong as that passion and tradition might be without the assistance from the EDC and JMH & Co. this entire process would've been much slower and there likely would've been a great deal of time and energy wasted on misguided ventures or marketing angles. Between the two of them they've certainly helped keep me and my business on the right track.”
Kat is continuing to expand the services he offers and looking at more effective methods of marketing his business. He hopes in the near future to establish his own commercial studio space and become more involved in community events and local businesses.
Parking Pass Exchange
Certain parking pass holders will need a replacement, as the existing passes are fading in the sun and making it difficult for security read them. If you have a parking pass for the B or E plug-in lot or the economy lots, you will need to exchange it.
If you meet this criteria, you can exchange your pass at the information desk in Centennial Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 31 to Nov. 10. Please bring your current pass with you to have it exchanged for a new one with the name number.
Ramotu Jimoh Library User of the Month
Library Services has chosen fourth-year Bachelor of Arts, Communication Studies student Ramotu Jimoh as November's library user of the month. She is obtaining her degree through Athabasca University. This is what Ramotu had to say:
"There is no doubt that without the help of the staff of the Vera Bracken Library I would not have been able to complete my assignments especially in the area of materials, references and citations for the assignments. They never let me feel different although I am an African Canadian.
The library feels like my second home especially because I have kids and I need a quiet place to study, so the library is a perfect choice for me. My favourite area in the library is the quiet study room and computer lab. I would like to thank the entire staff... especially the ones who are at the information desk, for their patience, kindness and their willingness to help me any time the library is open with their great smiles."

MHC Nabs ACAC Honours
The Alberta College Athletic Conference recently announced the 2011-2012 Coaches of the Year, selected by their ACAC Coaching peers. Jim Loughlin, head coach for the men's and women's soccer teams, won the honour for his work with the men's team.
Students who made the 2011-2012 ACAC All Conference soccer teams as chosen by the conference coaches, are Derrick Hammel, Allan Siwela, Kristi Segall, Caroline Lonsdale, Jacie Brusky and Kristen Grover.

MHC Receives Two Chamber Awards
Medicine Hat College received the Marketing Excellence Award at the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards last Friday. The Marketing Excellence Award is given to the organization that has best demonstrated excellence, innovation, and originality in traditional or new media marketing.
Medicine Hat College was recognized for the We’re Here awareness/recruitment campaign launched in the fall of 2010. The We’re Here campaign has been used to convey our geographic advantage to regional users, as well as an atmosphere of support, tradition, and stability. The Workplace Health and Safety Award recognizes an organization that has shown leadership through its commitment to improving its health and safety management practices or implemented a new, unique, forward-thinking and original idea to create a safer, healthier work environment.
Medicine Hat College was recognized for taking a proactive innovative approach in preparing for unusual and potential catastrophic events. We’ve made some significant improvements in ensuring a safe and secure environment including our communication system that was installed this past year. Paramedics Run Amazing Race
The teams simulated care on a series of five mannequins, all the same individual who was the victim of a bull attack. The first station required the students to perform an initial assessment of the 'patient.'
The students then performed airway management where an instructor insured the students knew the right doses and sequence of the three required medications and inserted an endiotrachial tube.
The students next addressed the collapsed chest by performing a needle decompression. The fourth station mimicked cardiac arrest and, finally, the groups ended up in the simulation lab to diagnose blown pupils and an increased ICP (intracranial pressure).
A student for the day from Crossfield was able to follow a team of five through the 'race' and said he "couldn't have picked a better day."
Duane Delaurier, a paramedic instructor, said simulation exercises allow students to practice their skills in a practical way. Sim training is an ongoing feature in the Health Studies department.
Notre Dame Students Study Trades at MHC
Every Friday afternoon, Grade 9 students visit the carpentry lab, learning from trades instructors.
Principal Robert Grisonich approached schools in Medicine Hat looking for a facility his students could use for hands-on trades development. The MHC trades department saw the value in the opportunity and jumped on the chance.
“It’s great exposure for the college and for the trades,” says Rocco Votta, manager of trades.
Votta believes the students' weekly visits to the college will familiarize them with the campus so that they consider coming back someday as full-time students.
Cathy Crockford, manager of continuing studies says the college is already exploring other partnerships with other schools.
“We’re also looking at programming options that might allow students to earn college credits for the time that they spend here,” Crockford says. “We hope it will help keep their attention through Grade 12, keep them interested, if they’re allowed to build credit toward their first year of college.”

Virtual Tours Online Now
College Advancement is pleased to showcase a new set of virtual tours available now on our website. They can be accessed of the home page of the MHC website or by clicking here.
Perspective students and their families can tour the exterior of the campus, Centennial Hall, the soft-seat area, power engineering lab, heavy equipment lab and the Vera Bracken library. All options are available in the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the virtual tour screen.
The new feature also includes high-quality images of various other areas and facilities around campus. We hope this serves as an excellent recruiting tool to show off our campus.
Geekapalooza 2011 Recap

United Way Payroll Campaign
We are now heading into the final week of MHC's United Way "Yes. We. Can" campaign. To remind you, we are in a fierce competition with Red Deer College and Grande Prairie Regional College to see which college will have the highest percentage of employee pledges. MHC has 44 employee pledges out of a possible 502.
The official deadline for the end of MHC’s United Way campaign is October 31. We will continue to accept pledge forms until November 14. Thanks to those who have already returned their completed forms. Please consider helping out our community by contributing to the United way. NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Needy Students Need Textbooks: A Campus Library Responds"
In “Needy Students Need Textbooks: A Campus Library Responds” Richard McKay, Library Director, at San Jacinto College South (TX), describes a strategy by which students unable to purchase their own textbooks get help from the library for long-term access to texts required in their courses. The lending program has gone to the aid of 50+ students to date.
