Innovate @ MHC Symposium
In today’s competitive education landscape, peer review publishing and obtaining external research grants are an important milestones of a modern academic. In this talk Dr. Jagoda will reflect on his experience working with external funding agencies and publishing in high quality journals and conferences. He will provide interesting insights into diligent planning and effective implementation practices that have emerged and converged in recent times. Dr. Jagoda’s presentation will also focus on critical success and failure factors relating to publishing, as well as guidelines as to academics can be proactive in planning their carriers.
Kalinga Jagoda is an Assistant Professor in Supply Chain Management at Bissett School of Business of the Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada. Dr Jagoda has published more than 50 articles in journals, edited books, and conference proceedings. His work has been awarded and appreciated in several academic and practitioner forums. His research has been funded by national and international agencies.
She is one of the Canadian co-authors for the three Canadian editions of Small Business Management, with the most recent edition published by Nelson in 2009. The text is a Canada's bestseller and is used at over 34 universities and colleges at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has been awarded a teaching award by the students of Mount Royal University, and has been nominated three times for a ‘Distinguished Teaching’ award.
Her most recent project with Kalinga Jagoda, PhD., pertains to a BR&E study of Alberta rural ventures. She publishes in both topics, and will present five papers and two workshops at four conferences this academic year.

Virtual Tours Online Now
College Advancement is pleased to showcase a new set of virtual tours available now on our website. They can be accessed of the home page of the MHC website or by clicking here.
Perspective students and their families can tour the exterior of the campus, Centennial Hall, the soft-seat area, power engineering lab, heavy equipment lab and the Vera Bracken library. All options are available in the drop-down menu in the top right corner of the virtual tour screen.
The new feature also includes high-quality images of various other areas and facilities around campus. We hope this serves as an excellent recruiting tool to show off our campus.
Support Project 50/50 - Help us Meet Our Goal
This month you have two chances to win! Beyond the regular 50/50 draw, you will be entered in October for two tickets to a Calgary Flames game.
Karoline Fox, manager, Registration Services, won the September draw for Project 50/50 and is walking away $375 richer. If we meet our goal of 100 participants the lucky winner will walk away with $500!

New Exercise Class Schedule
A new schedule is now out for the free Be Fit For Life fitness classes. Changes to the schedule include a second Zumba class Tuesday after work from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. and a Tuck, Tighten and Tone class Thursday at lunch instead of yoga. Monday's F.I.T. class was replaced with cardio kickboxing.
"There has been a lot of positive feedback in regards to the fitness classes," said Sonya Soveran. "Numbers are up from last year and the variety of classes that are offered make it easy for participants to find something they will enjoy."
Classes are held in H131, a portable behind the H building at the North side of the main campus beside the tennis courts. Enter through the H building and exit at the opposite end. Enter the second portable.

Geekapalooza 2011 Recap
For those of you who may have missed out on the great sessions during Geekapalooza this past August, will be interested to know that all of the sessions have been developed into a short series of video recaps.

Library User of the Month
"Having been a student, as well as an employee, and most recently, a student again, I have spent many hours within the library walls. Whether it be just another late night doing homework, checking out a book, or simply just stopping by to talk to the librarians, the library has become much like a second home for me. In fact, I think there are even some people who would consider it to be my first. After many nights having been kicked out by the flashing light just before closing time, I have gotten to know this place very well. With librarians who are never shy to lend a helping hand, which is always welcome with the increasing demands for APA writing, the library has become not only a place for learning, but also a place to find a friend. Even greater than the many resources offered by the library, are the great people here who really make this facility into what it has become. Thank you to everyone here as I am honored to be the 2011, October Library User of the Month.”
United Way Payroll Campaign
We are now heading into the final two weeks of MHC's United Way "Yes. We. Can" campaign. To remind you, we are in a fierce competition with Red Deer College and Grande Prairie Reginoal College to see which college will have the highest percentage of employee pledges. MHC has 42 employee pledges out of a possible 502.
The deadline for donations and pledges is October 31. Please consider helping out our community by contributing to the United way. Help St. Patrick's School Win an Outdoor Classroom
St. Patrick's School is a finalist to win $20,000 towards building an outdoor classroom at the school through Majesta's Trees of Knowledge competition. The school has one of the highest utilization rates in the city and an outdoor classroom would provide teachers with more options for creativity in their programs. Currently the school is in second place to a school in Quebec.
St. Patrick's is the only school from Alberta in the contest. In order to win the $20,000, we need the public's support in an online vote. Each person can vote every day until November 4. As an educational institution, we share the same vision for improving education for the betterment of our entire community.

This year the four recipients were honoured at a luncheon. Kris Woods and Matthew Huband, both studying engineering, and Kelsey Schaufele and Kyler Baker, studying commerce, will receive $5,000 a year for four years.
"There is no greater gift you can give a student than less stress and less worry," said Kyler Baker as he spoke on behalf of his fellow recipients. "We are going to use this gift to focus on our education and complete our studies to the greatest of our abilities. We won't let you down."
Thus far, the Eresman bursary has helped 24 students obtain post-secondary education. Each worked hard to achieve high grades and show themselves deserving of the bursary.
SouthVenture Business Plan Contest
Medicine Hat College is pleased to provide post-secondary students in Medicine Hat and region an opportunity to participate in the SouthVenture Student Business Plan Competition.
Do you have a business idea, but don’t necessarily know what’s needed to launch your company? There are many questions when considering a start-up. Issues such as: What are the legal issues with creating a company? Where is the financing going to come from? Am I targeting the right market? This is the competition that can help you get the answers and ensure you learn the fundamentals on how to build a viable business plan!
An educational component consisting of six weekly seminars gets underway on October 19. These seminars run every Wednesday evening, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., until November 23 room S102.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: "Writing to Serve"
In “Writing to Serve,” Matt Forester, English Instructor, at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, describes a community-based writing assignment that provided students with expanded knowledge of service organizations in their community and a real audience for whom to write a persuasive article.
