Sugar Strings Swimwear Claims Entrepreneur of the Month
Kristan Votta and Angelica Bonaparte had a hectic summer launching their own business. In a few short months Sugar Strings Swimwear successfully established a website and a solid client base, and held their first-ever fashion show.
“Sugar Strings Swimwear is a luxurious swimwear line that caters to sweet, sexy, and sophisticated women,” said Votta.
With that, Votta and Bonaparte decided to create a swimwear line that is accessible to Canadians and a unique fashion-forward alternative to the current selection of suits women have to choose from.
Over the last few months, the duo spent their time designing, marketing, and manufacturing their products in Calgary. The 2011 season closed with a growing fan base including fitness models and holiday travelers and worldwide business relationships.
The vibrant eye-catching collections have caught the eye of the Edmonton Eskimos cheer team, professional athletes and up-and-coming models. In the new year, they will be working with fitness campaigns, expanding the online store across North America and growing the brand internationally.
“It has been a challenging year starting from ground zero... but at the end of the day my business partner and I followed our plan and are excited to grow and build our Sugar label,” said Votta.
Sugar Strings Swimwear was a recipient of grant funding from the $250,000 JMH & Co. donation. Votta said the money allowed “us to put money towards items that will increase our quality and success and has given us a huge boost as a new company.”

MHC-WiFi Wireless Network
- More Locations
- Wireless access will soon be available in instructors' offices in the E, L, S and 3rd floor B-wings, with more expansion to come
- Content Filtering Removal
- Content filtering is not applied to the MHC-WiFi network
- Authenticated Access - You enter your MHC username and password to log on
- More Leases, better bandwidth control
- Authenticated access should reduce the number of devices that automatically connect to the network
Classroom Equipment Expansion
Nearly all classroom spaces have at least an Internet connected computer and a projector, the final few classrooms without any technology will be outfitted in the coming months.
SharePoint
We are in the midst of a project to replace our old SharePoint server named ‘Winky’ with a new server named ‘Source’.
Blackboard
A successful trial of automatically enrolling students has been completed. In the future, an online form will provide instructors with course creation and copy options.
Web VPN Service - Accessing College Services and Data from Off Campus
- Last year we put in place a web based VPN service (virtual private network).
- MHC employees can log in to the service and access network storage locations and key applications
- If on campus, go here to SharePoint for instructions on accessing the VPN
P Drive - Network Storage for your College Files
- The P drive is an individual network storage location for all employees at MHC
- This folder is backed up regularly to our network storage array
- This folder is accessible from any computer with an Internet connection by logging in to the college’s web VPN service.
- Instructions on accessing the P drive can be found on the ITS blog.
Craig Cote - Surfacing: Metaphor and Meditation
Craig Cote's new body of work plumbs the murky depths of myth, metaphor, dream states and meditation, surfacing with strange, and strangely familiar, visions of human possibility.
In etched, overprinted and stencilled works on paper, Cote's delicately conjured figures emerge, shirt and transform, evocatively resolve and dissipate. Reflecting upon American 20th century scholar Joseph Campbell's revelatory ideas about the metaphorical vocabularies of myth, and using an intuitive, deeply felt process, Cote develops the prints in multiple steps over time and with attentive patience. The results are quietly moving, sensitive and intriguing meditations on our worldly and metaphysical human condition.
A free reception at the Esplanade with Craig Cote is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. as part of Alberta Arts Days.
Innovate @ MHC Symposium
Dr. Linda Schwartz is excited to announce MHC's first research symposium, "Innovate @ MHC"! The symposium will provide an opportunity to learn about current work in your area, network with colleagues, and find out about all the exciting work that is going on at MHC. Intended for an internal audience, the symposium provides an opportunity to showcase scholarly and innovative work that faculty, staff and students are doing at MHC. Proposals are invited for three streams:
- Funding, grant writing and publishing
- Scholarship of teaching and learning
- Research and innovation
- Concurrent sessions (30 or 60 minute periods, interactive lecture)
- Poster/booth displays (to be displayed for the duration of the symposium with key times for networking)
- Round-table discussions (50 minute periods intended for smaller interactive groups)
Can You Find Value in a Coffee Cup? Join the You Innovate Tournament
The Canadian Youth Business Foundation is challenging students with the You Innovate Tournament to create as much value as they can from a coffee cup.
Students can work on their own or in class (it may take up a few lectures and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation will provide teaching notes and everything else you’ll need.)
By October 18, students will submit a three-minute video sharing their story and making the case for why they’ve created the most value. The winner will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week (Nov. 14-20). There are BIG prizes for the top presenters, including a trip to England.

CCAA National Scholar Award Winners
The Rattlers and Medicine Hat College are pleased to announce that 24 student-athletes have been named CCAA National Scholar Award winners for the 2010-11 academic year.
The National Scholar Award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of CCAA student-athletes. To be recognized, a student-athlete must achieve honours standing at their institution in the current academic year. From last year’s 109 CCAA member institutions, 752 student-athletes were awarded the prestigious honour in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
Medicine Hat College finished 7th overall in total award winners and 3rd overall when subtracting cross country running and badminton, sports in which the Rattlers do not compete in.
Congratulations to all the recipients of the CCAA National Scholar Award as well as to the coaches and administration at the college!
Take the Redi Recycling Survey
REDI is seeking input from the households in Medicine Hat about recycling in your community. We would like ask you for your participation in an online survey as part of a research project. The purpose of the research project is to seek input on residential recycling in Medicine Hat and identify levels of recycling activity in the community and factors that encourage recycling. The data collected during surveys will contribute to a better understanding of recycling and assist REDI in their recycling operations. Once data is collected and organized, it will be presented to REDI and a summary report of the survey will be posted on their website. Men's Volleyball Running Hockey Pool Fundraiser
Are you an avid hockey fan? Sign up for the hockey pool fundraiser hosted by the men's Rattlers volleyball team. The cost of each entry is $20. You can enter as many times as you wish. Prize money will be awarded following the regular season on April 7. You could win $200 for third place, $300 for second and $500 for first place.
Entries must be submitted by noon on October 6. Enter at http://www.hockeydraft.ca/ with the username rattlers and the password volleyball. Cheques can be made out to Medicine Hat College Men's Volleyball and sent to the college c/o Kyle Pushkarenko. For a full list of rules, click here.

United Way Payroll Campaign
It’s back. The College’s “I Already Gave at the Office Campaign” United Way campaign starts soon. When you receive a pledge card, sometime within the next couple weeks, consider giving for the first time, giving what you gave last year, or increasing your amount. You can give cash, use your credit card for a one time donation, or request monthly payroll deductions. The United Way is not having payroll bingo this year. Our goal is reach $10,000. Yes. We. Can.

All classes are free for staff and students and located in H131 beside the tennis courts. There is a different lunch-hour class daily from 12:10 to 12:50 and after-work classes Monday and Wednesday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.

Announcing New Board Members
Don Bruce, Chair
On behalf of the Board of Governors of Medicine Hat College, Dr. Ralph Weeks is pleased to announce that Don Bruce has been appointed to the position of Chair of the college’s Board of Governors. Mr. Bruce has been a member of the Board of Governors for the past four years and is well prepared to take on the new leadership duties of the Chair. Don has been a resident of Brooks for the past 14 years. Don retired in 2003 from a 32 year career with a major energy company having spent the last 24 years of his career in a leadership position. Don is very involved in his community working with the Brooks Bandits Junior “A” Hockey Club and volunteering for such activities as the Leisure Centre and Multi-Use Arena Fundraising Campaign and he has served as the Chair of the Brooks Policing Committee. 
Austin Curtin, Public Member
Dr. Weeks is further pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Austin Curtin as the newest public member of the Board of Governors of Medicine Hat College. Mr. Curtin is the owner/operator of Canadian Tire in Medicine Hat. Prior to his venture into retail entrepreneurship, Austin spent 14 years in management for Zellers which included stints in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Mr. Curtin has operated Canadian Tire stores in Ontario and Newfoundland before settling in Medicine Hat in 1980. He also operated stores in Brooks and Cold Lake, from headquarters in Medicine Hat, from 1985 to 2005. Mr. Curtin received the Dealer “Award of Excellence” in 1997 and he served on the Canadian Tire Corporation Board of Directors from 1998 to 2008.
