Juno-award winning Bedouin Soundclash will headline Medicine Hat College’s Homecoming 2011 celebration, slated for September 16-17.
The free all-ages concert will cap off a weekend of homecoming activities at the college, dubbed “Shake, Rattler n’ Roll.” Festivities begin on Friday, September 16 with an Alumni Cabaret featuring local recording artist and MHC alumni Mahoney.
Saturday begins with the Rattlers Hall of Fame breakfast, where new members will be inducted and alumni will be reunited. Rattlers soccer kicks off at noon, with games for both the men’s and women’s teams vs. Lethbridge.
For the second straight year, MHC is proud to offer the ATB Family Fun Zone. Families are invited to join in the fun with a variety of activities for kids of all ages on Saturday afternoon. Bouncy houses, slides, face painters and the like will keep the whole community having fun.
MHC is expanding the homecoming event this year by starting the live music earlier than in previous years. At 4 p.m. both the live music and ATB Family Fun Zone will begin. Further acts will join the musical slate prior to Bedouin Soundclash, with a full line-up being confirmed later this summer.
The evening will once again end with a spectacular display of fireworks set to music.

Employee survey shows student focus
A December 2010 survey of employees suggests that, in the opinion of for most, MHC focuses on student needs and is a great place to work.
The Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) survey was completed by 266 employees who provided their perceptions of the college climate. The results for Medicine Hat College are measured against an ideal model and compared to outcomes at other institutions employing the PACE survey.
The summary of results says, “At MHC, the overall results from the PACE instrument indicate a healthy campus climate, yielding an overall 3.77 mean score or High Consultative system.” This refers to the four “systems” in the PACE model: Coercive, Competitive, Consultative and Collaborative.
At Medicine Hat College, the Student Focus category received the highest mean score (4.02) based on respondents rating various climate aspects on a five-point scale from a low of 1 to a high of 5.
The report notes that few of the 120 institutions using the PACE survey have been found to achieve a fully collaborative environment.
The five best response areas:
- The extent to which I feel my job is relevant to this institution’s mission (4.33)
- The extent to which my supervisor expresses confidence in my work (4.15)
- The extent to which non-teaching professional personal meet the needs of students (4.11)
- The extent to which students receive an excellent education at this institution (4.11)
- The extent to which this institution prepares students for further learning (4.10)
- The extent to which institutional teams use problem-solving techniques (3.48)
- The extent to which my work is guided by clearly defined administrative processes (3.50)
- The extent to which this institution is appropriately organized (3.58)
- The extent to which a spirit of cooperation exists at this institution
- The extent to which institution-wide polices guide my work (3.60)

Summer Cafeteria Closure
During the summer months, a reduced campus population means reduced demand for cafeteria services. Beginning June 27 the MHC cafeteria will be closed and will reopen August 15. In the meantime, salads, soup, sandwiches and beverages will be available at Starbucks. Catering for major events only will still be available by contacting staff at Starbucks.
Crave is also open for the summer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.
College Day is Coming
Mark your calendars for August 24 when College Day kicks off the 2011-12 academic year. The keynote speaker for this year will be Linda Edgecombe. Linda is an internationally renowned, award-winning humorous speaker, trainer and consultant. She is a best-selling author who energizes every room as she leads people to loosen up, lighten the load and laugh. Linda will be leading MHC through an educational, hands-on and highly humorous ride that will refocus, reenergize and reinvent how we see our lives and work.

Jason Feyter Places First at National Skills Competition
Second-year plumbing student Jason Feyter placed first at the Skills Canada Competition in Quebec City this past weekend. He is the first MHC trades student to win gold at the national level.
Jason won a place at nationals by placing first at the 19th Annual Provincial Skills Canada Competition May 12 and 13 in Edmonton. Feyter beat out six other competitors from post-secondary institutions across the province for the chance to represent Alberta.
“We are extremely proud of his accomplishments,” said Danny Wilson, coordinator for the Plumbing/Gasfitting programs. “It’s not very often a small institute produces this type of quality.”
The World Skills Competition is held every two years so Jason didn't qualify for this year's event in London. He will be eligible next year to compete again and if he is successful at nationals, he will represent Canada at the Leipzig, Germany competition in 2013.
Feyter is halfway through his second year of plumbing classes with the Department of Trades at Medicine Hat College. He works for DMT Mechanical in Lethbridge and will soon be taking his exam to become a third-year apprentice.

Peter Wallis Project 50/50 Winner in June
Congratulations to Peter Wallis, the June winner of Project 50/50. Peter won $255 and the other $255 is going into the Students' Greatest Needs Scholarship.
"50/50 supports student scholarships and what could be better than that? Financial support to a deserving student is the best way I can think of to say that we believe in what we do and care enough to help make it possible by financial donations. I never expected to win anything but every once in a while you get lucky," said Wallis.
Stop by College Advancement and drop off your $10. You can also fill out a pledge form at Human Resources for automatic payroll deductions that will make you eligible for the July draw.

First Aid Training
Itching to apply a splint? Like to learn how to bring someone back to life with an AED? The college provides first aid training free of charge to all interested employees. A class date will be announced when we have enough interested staff. Please contact Rodger Sloan or Janice Kirchner to register.
If you are already first aid trained, contact Rodger at 8439 so your HR file can be updated.
Smoking Areas
This is a reminder that as per the Alberta Tobacco Reduction Act, there is no smoking allowed in any campus facility or within 5 meters of any entrance. Fines for violations of the act start at $287. To assist our grounds staff in keeping our campus beautiful, please use one of the designated smoking areas. A map of these areas can be found here.
College Garage Sale
Periodically the College disposes of surplus furniture and equipment. This year’s garage sale will be in the first week of September. If your lab or storage area needs a spring clean out, now is the time. Please check with Finance first if the item is of significant value. Contact Rodger at 8439 for disposal options. New Security Personnel
MHC would like to welcome Corps of Commissionaires, the successful bidder for the new security contract to replace G4S. Look for many of your favourite security personnel to remain with us as they move over to the new company.
The Commissionaires are one of the largest security companies in Canada and the only one operating under non-profit agency status. The College wishes to formally thank G4S for their five years of providing this service to our community and contributing to the welcoming environment here at MHC.
Weight Room Relocations
Please take note that the weight room is now open in the Poundmaker Room in the L Wing. There is no access to the change rooms in the G Wing but there is still access to the towel service. Showers are available for use in the T Wing. Weight room hours in the new location are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
How does it work?
- On Sept. 26 we'll announce an everyday household object
- Then students from across Alberta will use that object to create as much value as they can (in much the same way that Stanford's students did using Post-It Notes in 2007)
- Some students will work on their own and some faculty members will have integrated the tournament into their course (it may take up few lectures and we will provide teaching notes and everything else you'll need)
- A month later, on October 23 the students will submit a 3-minute video sharing their story and making the case for why they've created the most value
- In November we'll announce the winners during Global Entrepreneurship Week (Nov. 14-20)
There are prizes up for grabs for the top students and an award for Alberta's Most Innovative Post-Secondary Teacher. Detailed rules and instructions will be posted when the tournament launches in August 2011.
