President's Message Regarding Convocation
Our annual convocation celebration is a time to recognize the achievements of our students as well as connect with the community. This year’s convocation ceremonies will take place on Friday, June 3 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. As this year’s celebration will occur on a Friday, there may be some minor business interruptions for all employees of Medicine Hat College. As gracious hosts to our graduates and their guests, all MHC employees are encouraged to consider the following.
- Though this is a Friday and jeans are typically permitted, please adhere to the traditional business casual dress code.
- Please consider carpooling. Drivers are encouraged to park in the gravel lots, trades lot, Cultural Centre and the B-wing lot in order to accommodate guest parking for the day.
- All employees are encouraged to be involved where possible. If you are able to attend the ceremonies, please do so. Remember to be a cordial host and allow the families of graduates to acquire the most desirable seating.
- If you cannot attend the ceremonies, please consider joining your colleagues in applauding our 2011 graduates as they begin the Grand March. All staff members are encouraged to gather outside of the Bookstore at 9:55 a.m. for the morning ceremony and 1:55 p.m. for the afternoon ceremony.
- Convocation will be streamed online this year at http://mhc.convocation.tv/. Due to bandwidth limitations, this website will not be available on campus on June 3. Please feel free to share this link with those who may wish to watch from off-campus.
Postal Strike Plan
A possible postal strike in the next week could affect the way we conduct business at MHC. Please know that Student Services and other departments are working to lighten our reliance on Canada Post before the possible strike date. This will include the way in which incoming students send their registration deposit. More information will be sent out as necessary.
Midsummer Night's Eve Golf Tournament
All Medicine Hat College staff are invited to the Midsummer Night’s Eve Golf Tournament sponsored by the Faculty Association Social Committee. It will be held on Tuesday, June 21 at the Paradise Valley Par 3 Golf Course, with the tee off beginning at 1 p.m., and supper at 5:30.
Please enter your team of five, or we can include you on one. The cost is $50 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf and supper. If you wish to attend the supper only the cost will be $25. Please register with the Faculty Association office at 504-3616 or e-mail facultyassoc@mhc.ab.ca by Thursday, June 16.

Jayson Feyter Places First at Provincial Skills Competition
Second-year plumbing student Jason Feyter placed first at the 19th Annual Provincial Skills Canada Competition May 12 and 13 in Edmonton. Feyter beat out six other competitors from post-secondary institutions across the province for the chance to represent Alberta for plumbing in Quebec City at the Skills Canada National Competition June 2 and 3.
“We are extremely proud of his accomplishments,” said Danny Wilson, coordinator for the Plumbing/Gasfitting programs. “It’s not very often a small institute produces this type of quality.”
Feyter is halfway through his second year of plumbing classes with the Department of Trades at Medicine Hat College. He works for DMT Mechanical in Lethbridge and in four short weeks will be taking his exam to become a third-year apprentice.
The provincial competition involved creating a high-level bridge from a supplied blueprint and parts. Requirements for judging were strict, with measurements having to be precise within 2 mm, and points docked for students needing to use any parts beyond what they were given.
Feyter is hard at work practicing for the national competition. His blueprint of a pump-base fountain was sent to him in advance so he had time to prepare. The Department of Trades and his four instructors – Rob Stroh, Scott Stickel, Dennis Beaudouin and Ryan Schaufele - have supported his efforts, purchasing necessary tools Feyter didn’t already own and providing extra instruction in class.

So for the moment we are coping okay... We anticipate a much larger problem related to “state of mind” as homeless faculty and students deal with necessities first. Teaching/learning will obviously be much lower down the priority list for many."
