Congratulations to Allen VandenBerg, the May winner of Project 50/50. Allen won $255 and the other $255 is going into the Students' Greatest Needs Scholarship.
"What a pleasant surprise to donate to such a worthy cause and then get this bonus. I think the 50/50 draw is a great way to remind us that many of our students put in great effort to participate at Medicine Hat College. Although the investment in education lasts a lifetime it comes with a price and to be able to help students who might otherwise struggle to continue is very gratifying.
The Students’ Greatest Needs Scholarship looks each year at where our students need help and attempts to ease that burden for some. That kind of flexibility makes it an especially exciting way to assist our students. I hope more people get involved and have the satisfaction of contributing directly to our students as this project goes forward. There are many ways to help – this is a fun one! The Early Bird gets the Payroll Worm!
Please put a reminder in your office calendars that the payroll submission dates are significantly earlier in May, June, and July. The submission dates to put in your calendar are: Wednesday, May 18, Monday, June 20, and Friday, July 15. Timesheets are to be completed as usual (from the 21st to the 20th) and submitted to payroll by 3:00 pm on those dates in order to ensure they are included in the Monthly payroll.
Convocation Volunteers Needed
Medicine Hat College will celebrate Convocation 2011 on Friday, June 3. Ushers, greeters, and student marshalls are needed to make the ceremonies run smoothly. MHC Girls' Choir Auditions
The MHC Girls' Choir is currently accepting auditions for its 2011-2012 season. The choir is looking for energetic singers aged 12-18 who embrace challenges and enjoy the social aspect of choral singing. No prior experience is necessary, however auditions will include vocalizes, sight reading, and ear training exercises.
Acceptance will also be based on attitude as well as full commitment to the choir's schedule of rehearsals, concerts, and tours. Auditions will be held May 10-11 by appointment and interested singers should contact Bradley van Middelkoop (bvanmiddelkoop@mhc.ab.ca; 403-529-4800; or by Facebook message) to schedule an audition time.
JMH & Co. Promises $250,000 to MHC Entrepreneurs
Local accounting and business services firm JMH & Co. has gifted Medicine Hat College $250,000, with the college seeing $50,000 a year over five years.
The gift will be used in two separate ways each year: five scholarships of $2,000 each will be provided to students attending MHC who are interested in entrepreneurship, and $35,000 will be used to provide business grant money to student entrepreneurs at MHC.
This funding will provide up to 50 percent of a business start-up fee. Depending on the number of applicants and start-up costs, there may be four or more students who benefit from this grant per year. JMH & Co. is also providing funds to MHC for administrative expenses related to managing these scholarships and grants.

Laara Cassells Wins 2010 Civic Recognition Award
Laara Cassells, an MHC instructor with the Visual Communications program, won a 2010 Civic Recognition Award for the Cultural category. She has been recognized and involved in the cultural sector both for the Medicine Hat College and the City of Medicine Hat as an instructor, an exhibiting artist and volunteer for many years.
The City of Medicine Hat's news release said an upcoming book by I.C.A Publisher NY, May 2011 entitled "International Contemporary Artists" will feature Cassells on one of its pages. She is an exemplary role model to peers and students, while encouraging and influencing them to accept the importance of culture within the community.
Civic Recognition Awards are presented to individuals who the community believes enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat by their dedication, activities, and accomplishments in the areas of culture, environment, humanitarianism, community inclusion, as well as sports and recreation. Recently, Cassells' work was included in the newest exhibition of the Portrait Society of Canada. Her portraits of Allan Gordon Bell were selected for “The Art of Canadian Music.” The exhibition showcases portraits of an array of contemporary musicians from across country and a variety of genres.

Dr. Marla Middleton Freitag Wins Innovation Award
Congratulations to Dr. Marla Middleton Freitag for winning the 2011 ACIFA Innovation in Teaching Award. This prestigious award is presented annually to faculty in recognition of their creative and innovative teaching methods.
Dr. Middleton Freitag’s use of digital imagery themed, “Project Possible” was selected by the Alberta Colleges and Institutes Faculties Association Professional Affairs Innovation Award Review Committee. Medicine Hat College proudly boasts of receiving this award for the second consecutive year, following Glen Allan’s 2010 award. Read the full story here.

In "Developing a Framework of Support for Adjunct Faculty: Collaboration Between Stakeholders," Suzanne Reyes and Rhonda Fabrizi, both Assistant Professors of English; and Peggy Bradford, Dean of Academic Affairs; and Karen Miller, Dean of Student Affairs, at Cuyahoga Community College (OH), describe a successful comprehensive program to keep adjunct faculty in important loops of best practices in their fields and information within the departments. A full toolkit of hard-copy documents, digital resources via a departmental Wiki, and teacher and student mentoring programs provide critical support.
