Local accounting and business services firm JMH & Co. has gifted Medicine Hat College $250,000, with the college seeing $50,000 a year over five years.
The gift will be used in two separate ways each year: five scholarships of $2,000 each will be provided to students attending MHC who are interested in entrepreneurship, and $35,000 will be used to provide business grant money to student entrepreneurs at MHC.
This funding will provide up to 50 percent of a business start-up fee. Depending on the number of applicants and start-up costs, there may be four or more students who benefit from this grant per year. JMH & Co. is also providing funds to MHC for administrative expenses related to managing these scholarships and grants.

Laara Cassells Wins 2010 Civic Recognition Award
Laara Cassells, an MHC instructor with the Visual Communications program, won a 2010 Civic Recognition Award for the Cultural category. She has been recognized and involved in the cultural sector both for the Medicine Hat College and the City of Medicine Hat as an instructor, an exhibiting artist and volunteer for many years.
The City of Medicine Hat's news release said an upcoming book by I.C.A Publisher NY, May 2011 entitled "International Contemporary Artists" will feature Cassells on one of its pages. She is an exemplary role model to peers and students, while encouraging and influencing them to accept the importance of culture within the community.
Civic Recognition Awards are presented to individuals who the community believes enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat by their dedication, activities, and accomplishments in the areas of culture, environment, humanitarianism, community inclusion, as well as sports and recreation. Recently, Cassells' work was included in the newest exhibition of the Portrait Society of Canada. Her portraits of Allan Gordon Bell were selected for “The Art of Canadian Music.” The exhibition showcases portraits of an array of contemporary musicians from across country and a variety of genres.

Ken is a "recovering academic," who was an award-winning PhD candidate in English Literature at the University of Toronto, before leaving academia to found a regional advertising agency in 1990. Ken and his team developing branding, marketing, and advertising campaigns for dozens of corporate, non-profit, and education-sector clients throughout the 1990s, before merging the agency to form Academica Group in 2005.
Ken has written numerous articles and white papers on institutional marketing and strategy, a syndicated column on graphic design, and a regular blog on higher education issues, and now manages a YouTube channel featuring notable higher education commercials.
Four years ago, as a service to Canada's higher education community, Ken founded a free daily newsbrief, Academica's Top Ten, which summarizes important events, emerging trends, research findings and aspects of youth culture for more than 8,500 subscribers, including college and university presidents and senior executives, government policy analysts, faculty, high school guidance counselors, and national media editors.

Spring Repair Session
The Automotive Department @ MHC will be accepting vehicles for our May/June 2011 repair session. If you have a vehicle that requires service in the areas listed on the application, fill out the form and return it to the Trades Office, attention Ray Shannon.
Please note: Ray will call when your vehicle is required for service. Every effort is made to accommodate all requests depending on time restraints and available tools and service information. Allow time for students to repair your vehicle, this is not a service station but is a training institution. All bills are for parts only, no labour. All bills must be paid in full when vehicle is picked up, no exceptions.

Dr. Marla Middleton Freitag Wins Innovation Award
Congratulations to Dr. Marla Middleton Freitag for winning the 2011 ACIFA Innovation in Teaching Award. This prestigious award is presented annually to faculty in recognition of their creative and innovative teaching methods.
Dr. Middleton Freitag’s use of digital imagery themed, “Project Possible” was selected by the Alberta Colleges and Institutes Faculties Association Professional Affairs Innovation Award Review Committee. Medicine Hat College proudly boasts of receiving this award for the second consecutive year, following Glen Allan’s 2010 award. Read the full story here.

Please be aware that you do not need to notify Sports and Wellness staff when vacating your locker at any time if you are staying for spring/summer.
If you are back for the fall semester, please re-register your locker during the first week of September. Locks that are not registered with Sports and Wellness will be cut off in September.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: An Academic Approach to Redesigning Faculty Professional Development
In "An Academic Approach to Redesigning Faculty Professional Development," Niki Whiteside, vice president for Educational Technology, and Sherry Ransdell, director of Instructional Design Services, San Jacinto College (TX), describe ACAdemic, a required faculty certification program for all faculty choosing to teach online and hybrid courses. The program is multi-layered to offer lessons/activities relative to orientation of student learners, framework for effective instruction, leveraging and creating Internet resources, assessment, communication, learning activities, and course management.
