MHC has teamed up with Alberta Employment and Immigration to host a Job Market Information Session on Monday, April 18. AEI representatives will discuss job search strategies and how job seekers can enhance the effectiveness of their search for employment.
Many MHC students are affiliated with AEI through the Alberta Works grant funding program, and the staff from AEI encourage those funded students, as well as ANY MHC student who is still seeking employment, to join them for one of these informative sessions.
The Job Market Information Sessions will take place in the College Theatre on April 18 from 10 a.m.- noon, and then will be repeated from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
AEI has also arranged to have a Meet and Greet with a number of local employers on that same day from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the College Cafeteria. ALL students are welcome to come and talk with a variety of employers about job opportunities that are still available. This may be the last chance to meet with this many employers at once, so mark Monday, April 18 on your calendar.

Ratter Run Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are required for the 31st annual Rattler Run on Saturday April 30. The time commitment is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteer Positions include:
- Hydrating participants (i.e. water stations)
- Telling participants where to go! (i.e. Course Marshalls)
- Cheering on finishers (i.e. finish line helpers)
- Riding on the heels of participants (i.e. cyclists on the course)
"Rip Off" Grad Show Showcases Vis Comm Work
Graduating students from the Visual Communications program will be showcasing their work from April 8-17 in Centennial Hall.
The show, titled Rip Off, will open the night of April 9, 2011 at 7:00 PM. Students will be on hand to showcase their portfolios and work and will be available for questions and comments.

Project 50/50 Announces First Winner
Matt Read, Manager of Financial Services, has a few extra bucks in his pocket thanks to Project 50/50. As the first ever winner for the month of April, Matt takes home $245, half of the $490 pot. The other $245 will go into the Students’ Greatest Need Scholarship.
"Project 50/50 is a fun way for me to give back to the MHC community and help support future students. The prize is nice, but the opportunity to give back in an unique way is the main goal,” said Matt.
Stop by College Advancement and drop of your $10. You can also fill out a pledge form at Human Resources for automatic payroll deductions and that will make you eligible for the May draw.

April is daffodil month for the Canadian Cancer Society. Daffodil pins can be purchased for a donation from a box located on the Information Desk in the library.

Textbook Order Deadline
April 1 is The Bookstore’s deadline for ordering textbooks for the Fall Semester. Most important this deadline ensures timely arrival of your textbooks for the semester and also allows us to manage our Book Buyback.

Once again it is time for Book Buyback. Instructors are encouraged to remind their students of the following dates and times:
- Friday, April 15 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- April 18 – 20 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Thursday, April 21 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Facility Operations on the Move
Facility Operations is now in F172 (off of the old Crowfoot room hallway). This includes Tom Teare, Greg Bechtold, Gayle Lemire, Carol Thompson.
On Monday, April 11 Rodger Sloan, EH&S will be moving to F168, also off of the Old Crowfoot room hallway. Security will stay where they are, by Crave.
On Tuesday, April 12 Kim Cocks, Room Bookings and Lynn Laurendeau, Student Information Systems are moving to F162 (on the new Crowfoot room hallway).
Recycling Reminders
Did you know that the College recycles more than just paper products and returnables? In our efforts to reduce the volume of garbage heading to the landfill we also recycle wood, metal, printer cartridges, batteries, and fluorescent bulbs. We do not currently take plastic but are looking at options for this when our new loading dock opens this summer. If you have a waste stream in your workspace that you would like to reduce contact Rodger for options rsloan@mhc.ab.ca.
The Saamis Rotary Club will be holding its annual electronics recycling drive this spring. The College will host a collection site and will accept any small appliances, TVs, stereos, computers, etc. at the security office (F128). No large appliances like fridges or stoves please.
Did you know that the City of Medicine Hat will take your e-waste? Drop off is free at the city landfill.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: Roll Call for Learning
In “Roll Call for Learning," Gretchen Aggertt Weber, Professor of Speech, at Horry-Georgetown Technical College (SC), describes a successful strategy for getting students more involved in preparing class assignments and reducing stress. Roll call can be an instructional tool that makes the most of class time typically spent on a required administrative chore.
In “Assessing Student Learning: Some Simple Classroom Methods,” Jim Kaufman, Adjunct Instructor of Sociology, at Hutchinson Community College (KS), describes a successful strategy for getting students to write and for identifying how much learning is going on each day in class.
