With a snowfall warning in effect for the Medicine Hat area, it's a great reminder to review the process for reporting a college closure.
If the campus was closed because of inclement weather, College Advancement would communicate with students, staff and faculty in the following ways:

Japan Fundraising Initiatives
Since the news of the earthquake and tsunami reached Medicine Hat College, students and staff have worked hard to raise money for the Red Cross. Through popcorn sales alone, more than $1,600 have been raised, with all proceeds being donated to Red Cross. Thank you for your support!
International Education students have further fundraising plans which will be announced in the near future through On Campus. Our thoughts and emotional support continue to be extended to not only our alumnus but to all the people of Japan who are suffering during this catastrophic event.
GEEKAPALOOZA 2011: Call for Presenters
The Geekapalooza Planning Committee is looking for technology enthused educators to present during our 4th annual event on August 25, the day after College Day. This annual professional development event brings together educators and technology by sharing ideas and discussing new trends & techniques.
If you have taken a different approach in integrating technology or have developed strategies in utilizing other technical tools, why not share your ideas with your peers? Payroll Deductions Available for Employees - Sign up for Project 50/50
Contribute $10 per month to Project 50/50, a fundraising initiative where half of the proceeds will go to one lucky draw winner each month, and half will go to the Students’ Greatest Needs Scholarship. Split the cheque for a great cause!
Getting involved is easy. Project 50/50 is open to staff, students, alumni and the community. Fill out a pledge form at Human Resources for automatic payroll deductions or drop off $10 at College Advancement before the last Friday of each month and you’ll automatically be entered in a public draw on the first Monday of every month. The more participants the bigger the pot so encourage others to get involved!
The Students’ Greatest Needs Scholarship addresses high-need areas identified on an annual basis. Sign up for Project 50/50 - you’ll support a great cause, and have a chance to win each month. Click here for more information.

In the market for a computer monitor? The surplus sale is on now at the Security office. Flat screen monitors are $40 each. There are no other items available. Cash sales only.
"Rip Off" Grad Show Showcases Vis Comm Work
Graduating students from the Visual Communications program will be showcasing their work from April 8-17 in Centennial Hall.
The show, titled Rip Off, will open the night of April 9, 2011 at 7:00 PM. Students will be on hand to showcase their portfolios and work and will be available for questions and comments.

Recycling Reminders
Did you know that the College recycles more than just paper products and returnables? In our efforts to reduce the volume of garbage heading to the landfill we also recycle wood, metal, printer cartridges, batteries, and fluorescent bulbs. We do not currently take plastic but are looking at options for this when our new loading dock opens this summer. If you have a waste stream in your workspace that you would like to reduce contact Rodger for options rsloan@mhc.ab.ca.
The Saamis Rotary Club will be holding its annual electronics recycling drive this spring. The College will host a collection site and will accept any small appliances, TVs, stereos, computers, etc. at the security office (F128). No large appliances like fridges or stoves please.
Did you know that the City of Medicine Hat will take your e-waste? Drop off is free at the city landfill.

We had a great response to our recent IT services survey IT services in preparation for the next MHC Technology Plan. Please join us for a session where we will present survey results, and consider some themes that are evident in the results. We welcome you to provide further feedback and have your questions answered.

Software Requests Deadline Nearing
It's time to think ahead to the next academic year and prepare for new or updated software for instructional purposes.

Many thanks to those who have taken the time to fill out and submit the reporting forms when showing a feature film or using recorded television programs in their classroom thus far! Keep them coming!!
The College’s agreements on public performance of these types of materials stipulate that the College must record and report their usage. Reporting is simple, easy to do and it only takes a minute or two. Anyone using a video/DVD copy of a major motion picture or a videotape of a recorded television program (does not include use of television programs in commercially available prepackaged boxsets or the like) can use the handy paper form that is distributed with the audiovisual equipment or visit the Faculty Resource web page on the Library’s website and download the reporting form found there.

This webinar on March 30 will describe emerging pathways in developmental math education with special attention to the STATWAY-a collaborative project of the Dana Center and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, designed to take developmental students to and through a college credit-bearing, transferable math course in one year.

Student Success Classes: One College's Story from Start to Results!
With the signing of Democracy's College, a Call to Action promoting the development and implementation of policies, practices, and institutional cultures that will produce 50 percent more students with high-quality degrees and certificates by 2020, community colleges must not only continue to ensure access, but also ensure that students are succeeding and completing. What does all this mean? And, perhaps more importantly-how and where does a college begin? Through national initiatives such as Achieving the Dream, one practice that is demonstrating proven results is the requirement that new students take a student success course. Tune in and listen to the Paris Junior College story, why they decided to adopt this idea (implementing a student success course), how they designed a student success course, and finally, the results from its implementation.
