TODAY is the last day to nominate someone for the 2011 Employee Recognition Program! You can help make Medicine Hat College a great place to work by participating. All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.
Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:

3. Service Achievement Award
4. Innovation Award

Celebrating People
The People To Be Proud Of program provides MHC with an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments and contributions of college employees and students. The People To Be Proud Of display is located in Centennial Hall and is updated with new stories each semester. We are proud to recognize the following employees for their contributions both on and off the Medicine Hat College campus:
- Clayton Bos (CADD Instructor) received the NISOD Excellence Award for his teaching expertise and dedication to students.
- Marla Middleton Freitag (Office Technology program coordinator) received the NISOD Excellence Award for her commitment to research, continued educational pursuits and her students.
- Keith Walker (Director of Library Services) is currently serving a year term as the President of the Canadian Library Association and is the first ever college librarian to hold this position.
- Provide evidence of the quality and capability of employees
- Showcase student or student accomplishments to which the viewer may aspire
- Feature awards and honours granted to the students, staff or alumni as third party validation of institutional quality
- Demonstrate how the nominee creates a stimulating learning environment
- Demonstrate how the nominee promotes partnership and collaboration
- Showcase the nominee's community service, including cultural, social and enrichment opportunities for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship
College awarded Certificate of Recognition
MHC has become the third educational institute in Alberta to be awarded its Certificate of Recognition (COR). This award recognizes best practices in safety management and will result in a significant reduction in Worker’s Compensation Board costs which currently run around $100,000 each year.
Alberta employers with a COR had:
- a 25% lower claims costs than those who did not,
- a 40% reduction in Lost Time Claim Rates and Disabling Injury Rates, and
- 50% lower fatality rates than the provincial average

Information Kiosk
If you have special events scheduled on campus, or if you have visitors coming, don’t forget to pass this on to Donna and Brenda at the Information Kiosk. The more information they are given about what is happening on campus the better they are able to provide help to our students, staff and visitors. Donna and Brenda answer many inquiries by phone and are also the first point of contact for community members as they enter the building. Email your information to regkiosk@mhc.ab.ca.

NISOD Innovation Abstract: Trying Something New: Unlecturing Mathematics
In "Trying Something New: Unlecturing Mathematics," Keith A. Nabb, Mathematics Instructor, at Moraine Valley Community College (IL), describes a successful experiment that has changed dramatically the way he teaches his Differential Equations course. He observes that he completely "took everything [he] had assumed about 'good teaching' and slapped it broadside."
