2010 Employee Recognition Program -
Last week for nominations!
You can help make Medicine Hat College a great place to work by participating! All you have to do is nominate a colleague or group whose contribution to the college community has been particularly worthy of appreciation. Just being nominated by a co-worker, who takes the time to spotlight a deserving individual or group, can be as satisfying as being selected to receive the award.
Medicine Hat College has four awards to honour its outstanding achievers who have made a positive impact within the college and/or college community and are deserving of extra recognition:
1. College Employee of the Year
2. Academic Achievement Award
3. Service Achievement Award
4. Innovation Award
Nomination and selection procedures, information regarding the criteria for each award, and nomination forms are available online. Please feel free to contact Human Resources for further information. Nomination deadline is February 28, 2010.
Who will YOU nominate?
Computer Security Starts With You
Your username and password is the first line of defense in keeping information secure and maintaining privacy. When you share your password with another person, or allow someone to use your account, the primary line of defense is gone.
Your college username and password protects you, your colleagues, and our students in the following ways:
- restricts access of personal information to the owner of the information (or to those who have the right to access it)
- prevents others from accessing your payroll information and personal work history
- prevents others from accessing files and information regarding your students
- prevents others from appearing to be you (i.e. the activity of people using your account could appear to be your activity)
Feel free to contact IT Services if you find a need to share computer account information. ITS can help to come up with a means to provide appropriate access without risking your security or privacy.
New Student Email Service for MHC
Through the months of March and April, MHC will transition students from our current “@student.mhc.ab.ca” email system to a new Gmail (Google Mail) email system “@mymhc.ca “
This change will increase email storage space (over 7GB), provide free access to Google docs and other select Google services, allow for web access through most smartphones, and provide significant savings in licensing, IT infrastructure and support services. The new address can also be kept indefinitely after leaving the college, improving our ability to stay in touch with alumni.
What do students need to know?
- If they have a current @student.mhc.ab.ca account they will have a new @mymhc.ca email account waiting for them on March 1, 2010.
- In most cases their username will be the same as their current username. For example joe.canuck@student.mhc.ab.ca will become joe.canuck@mymhc.ca
- Their initial password on the new system will be the last 4 digits of their MHC Student Identification Number followed by the first three letters of their last name, the first letter capitalized. For example Cindy Canuck with student ID 202005858 will have an email password of 5858Can .
- The first time they use the @mymhc.ca service they will be asked to create a new password.
- Until May 1 their @student.mhc.ab.ca account will remain operational. This will give them time to forward any email they want to keep to their new account, and move contacts into the new system.
- On May 1, 2010 the @student.mhc.ab.ca system will be permanently shut down.
- Email addresses in MHC’s Blackboard system will be updated so that instructors using the system can contact them.
After March 1, 2010 go directly to the webpage http://mail.google.com/a/mymhc.ca or follow the link to Webmail on the MHC website.

Library Staff Complete Their Own Torch Relay
Submitted by Anne Baxter
1 country, 25 participants, 106 days, 26,000 kilometres – Go!
In October of last year, 25 library staff members signed up to participate in the Library Services version of the Olympic Torch Relay. The challenge was to convert any physical activity into steps and as a team, to follow the real Olympic Torch across the land portion of its journey across Canada. 26,000 kilometres in 106 days!
Each participant was handed a pair of Olympic red mittens, a pedometer and the encouragement to go ‘swifter, higher, stronger’. We totaled our step counts for walking, cycling, running and climbing stairs. We calculated our minutes of aquasize, swimming, weight lifting and yoga. We tallied dog walks, dancing, grocery shopping and vacuuming. A large map of the relay route was posted as motivation and as a visual representation of our efforts. A record was kept of each person’s activity and the number of steps they contributed. While this might have discouraged some of the non-competitors in our group, in reality it had the opposite effect. We encouraged each other in our physical activities, we discussed what people did in their spare time and admittedly it did generate a little bit of friendly competition.
So, did we manage to finish the relay in time for the opening ceremonies on February 12th? Yes we did, with a few hours to spare. But perhaps the bigger achievement was the sense of community and teamwork that developed as a result of the challenge. And isn’t that what the Olympics are meant to inspire in all of us?
